Golfs have two oil pressure switches - one is normall open, the other normally closed.

One operates at a lower pressure than the other and is for "low RPM" and the dash switches over to the other one at about 2000 rpm or something.

That way, they can have the system detect "critical" problems of lowish pressure at high RPMs while not doing false positives and bringing the light on at idle when the oil is boiling hot.

Aaaanyway, if you put the wrong switch in the wrong place, the light will come on. They're colour coded (supposedly)

Golf has reprieve!!!! I will do an oil and filter change when I get some cash, maybe lower the sump and give it a clean. Do these need a sump gasket or is it smidge of sealant?

Find the engine code to be sure but I think sealant.

I wouldn't bother with the sump, just get some decent 10W40 and a Mann/Bosch filter.

Then sell the car to me.

Did a little bit of cleaning the interior of the Golf. Due to it being cold outside I ran the Golf. Temp gauge stayed in the safe zone throughout. The oild light did not twitch at all Happy.

Found the 22mm socket and ratchet. They were in the drivers pocket of the Alfa of course. No, I don't know why either.

Okay, any interest in relation to someone buying the Golf?

Everything seems to work on it. The oil pressure switch is happy as Larry, I reckon it was a dirty connection.

The car now has a headlining. It's not perfect but it's good enough. Interior from a GTi and it is very clean and tidy. No odour of dog.

Tyres good, drives very well indeed. In fact I would say it is lovely to drive.

MOT'd for quite a while.

I have a new exhaust from the cat backwards that will be fitted.

Issues? A couple. The steering wheel is not in the correct orientation, looks like it was removed at one point, etc. The airbag light is on and could well be related. Some convenient black tape assisted with the MOT.

I fitted some alloy door lock pin things. Mostly as I could then see them go up and down on the central locking. Sorry. The front wings have a bit of corrosion on them but nothing horrible.  Bonnet and roof have scratches.

Location: Norf London. Price £350 OVNO for a very nice runner indeed.

I really don't get how unloved they are.

They're loads better than the asthmatic Mk2 and the uncomfortable Mk1.  I still don't want one like, but at least VW were learning and improving this particular model and the Mk3 was Not Too Bad.

They are as cheap as sliced fried potatoes, even the GTi versions.

I do.

They were not as solidly built as the Mark 2 (itself not that great), not by a long way. My Mum had three when they were current models. First was a K reg (nearly new) 1.8CL that was quite well made but wallowy, slow and nothing a 1.3 Corolla hatchback wouldn't eat for breakfast. The previous 1.8GL Mark 2 was faster and better handling. Work that out. It was remapped to 90 bhp and had a Koni kit fitted so it became an alright car. It was sold for very good money and replaced by a K reg 2.0GTI. I bought it cheap from Blackbushe BCA and it was shite. It rattled like fuck, the gearbox whined in 5th and it was just a bit rubbish. This was p/xed against a VR6 3 door auto (M plate) that was better but still had infuriating rattles and buzzes from the interior. It also drank fuel and was a bit of a pudding.

A lot of Mark 3's were rusting at four and five years old. The Mark 4 couldn't come fast enough to save VW's very battered reputation. Like the early E36's when the door trims fell off and glovebox lids sprang open over potholes, the Mark 3 is the Golf VW would like to forget. A very late 2.0 GTi 3 door in that funky yellow - I can see that having a value.
