How long does it take to sell a shitter?

No because the bands pre- and post-2001 are still different. If our Picasso was 18 months older it would be £185 a year instead of £120 as a post '01.

I don't sell much stuff on ebay, but at the moment I'm having a bit of a clear out from the garage. I've put an old VW exhaust up for sale and I swear to god I'm not exaggerating - this is a question I've just received:hi thr how much r u looking 4 the egzaust and how far away from kidderminster r u thnks leonBear in mind my location is in the ebay ad, should I sell parts to someone who can't read and clearly can't write? Can they be trusted to fit something as complicated as an egzaust, sorry exhaust

Well after reading that lot I am really looking forward to selling my Corsa td now

Got a potential buyer over the phone, he says he has a few questions.

Skipping the usual facts that are quoted on the advert (well done), he goes straight into geography:

1) What is my address? Gives rough area

2) Is the car kept outside the house? No, it's kept in a garage

3) Is the garage next to the house? Er ... no, it's away from the house

3) Where is this garage located?

At this point I'm so confused as to why he's asking these questions? Why would he need to know where the garage is. I abruptly tell him to I'm not giving out any private information. He is coming up on Tuesday, but I'm still wondering why he needed to know?

Ring him back, and ask him if he'd like you to leave the garage door open, and the keys in the ignition........

maybe he's just nicked some taxed plates and you car matches them?

I always find ebay better than private ads in Autotrader etc. When I was selling a MK3 Golf GTI I platered it on Gumtree etc and got tons of morons.

"Alright mate, you still got the Golf?"

Yes mate, what do you want to know?

"Whats it like coz I got to get a train down form London innit"

(Brief Description)... and its up for £700

"Will you take £250?"

Er... no, I will have a bit of a deal with you, but i'm not going to piss it out the door

"Er.. I only got £250"

Good luck to you then, Bye

Or, With a price and number in the window....

"Hello, Im ringing because I saw the For Sale in the window of the Fiesta"

Yeah, its a nice car

"I thinking about getting a car for my daughter, but not for a few months, will you still have it then?

Er....I hope not

"Oh, Ok thanks"

The Clio is listed in the Quids in paper today and so far ive only had 2 calls, which is weird as I thought for 295 quid the phone would be red hot.One chap asked if he could have a look tonight, while another woman phoned asking if it was taxed (which it isnt) as she needed a car for today.

Posted

And there's another one: everyone seems to want something like it's yesterday. 'I'll come up with the hour with cash' (followed by an offer a tenth of it's true value) or 'can you tax it for me and I'll collect first thing tomorrow morning'? The latter asked at 5.00pm on a Saturday.Still like the ones who say they will only call on a certain day at a certain time. So you tell them you won't be in and they insist on coming then. At that juncture it's time to tell them to go and buy something else because you can't help them and then replace the receiver.

I must admit, I'm not holding out much hope of flogging the Renault 21. I think that perhaps only myself and Lankytim consider it worth a punt. Oh well. I'll just keep it for my own personal shite museum!

Posted

Well, the Clio went to the lad who rang this morning. No quibbles, full 295 asking price. He did offer me 250 but I told him its none negotiable as I have had 'loads of calls' Not a Lie as I had about 3 missed calls when I looked at my phone after playing football after work. I think that is a fair price after the 'revovation' I gave it -

His girlfriend was with him and the car was for her to learn to drive with. Thankfully they were not a scummy couple and seemed pleasant enough.

Last motor I sold (lowered 2CV....not normally shite but this one was an absolute heap of it....) went within a week of putting it up for sale. Lad paid deposit via PayPal, turned up with his mate, gave me the rest in cash and didn't even test-drive it before handing over the £££ and driving it 150m back to Essex with the front towing-eyes scraping the tarmac over every bump.

Mind you it was somewhat unsurprisingly back on Ebay a month later.

I don't have the problem of with dealing with the public when selling cars as I weigh nearly everything in. I can't remember the last time I sold a car on the "open" market and had strangers coming round to see it, thats probably because many of the cars ive owned have been "minority interest" such as the Reno 21 and have been sold through specialist forums. Actually, I do remember the last time...I sold Ital estate years ago, third gear was broken, it looked a heap of shit but it was mega cheap. The number of spackers and down and outs that came to view was mind boggling. I remember a trampy guy coming with his family, he really liked the car and didnt pick many faults he needed a piss so took a slash over a fence up the road then said he was just popping off "to get some cash". Never saw him again. The guy who did buy it in the end got a speeding ticket followed by a parking ticket in Cardiff, both of which got sent to me. I was just amazed the shit old Ital got from Brum to Cardiff!

I sympathise - there are 2 types of buyers - players and puntersplayers are ...well us....those who understand that a 500 quid car is...well...a 500 quid car!punters - well we all know those - they either dick you around with stupids questions OR they come back at you when somthing breaksI get around it by doing the following:if it is a shitter that has an interest factor to other shitters then I off it cheap on here or on RR and usually a punter will pick it up - these are cars that have no real material value but are a cost to run. I have usually bought them as shitters from other shitters or punters.owners clubes are important places to find punters - although this only tends to be an option with a 'classic"I avoid auto trader, loot, exchange and mart as all you get are tits.carandclassic is a good bet - I have always sold quickly there with no comebackebay is good as wellsell shitters with no reserve and with a sold as seen caveat. I would suggest that you take a paypal deposit of not less than £150 - this stiops tyre kickers. be strict in ascertaining that the interested party is a player not a punter and understands that they are buying an older cheaper caralways provide a receipt - signed by both parties stating the car is sold as seen and has no warrantywhen swapping always do the same - following these rules then all you have to worry about is answering a few emails.if a 25 year old renner is on the market for £500 you want to be sellling it to somone who has the werewithall to take a 500 quid hit when it breaks - therefore paypal payment is important

I'm at the stage now where I've got the two cars I want/need, and the only way they'll be leaving me (unless nicked or written off) is if they are completely ratfucked and not worth fixing. Picked of useful bits they will be across the scales and I'll be getting a taxi home, £150 richer. My only interest in buying a car isa)if it's so stupidly cheap it would be monumentally stupid not to buy itb) See above. If I can't make £500 out of it with minimal effort, I'm not interested. I just have better things to do!

Findings slightly different to your's Scooter.eBaY: (almost) full of fucking idiots who are only interested in trying to find your reserve price, asking if you have a buy-it-now, offering stupid amounts then fucking off.Owner's clubs: Usually full of adverts from people with one post who think by posting on that particular forum there car is worth twenty times what it actually is.Auto-Trader: Much love felt. The right car at the right price will always sell, far less mongs than eBaY and generally a good call-view-buy ratio. One make forums usually quite good even when off-loading non-Vauxhall/Ford/Mini/whatever cars. Also if you adevrtise where people can reply underneat you'll get the feekling if something is likely to sell quick by the number of replies you get below the advert. 'Wish I was nearer' 'if only I could get the money' etc never bothers me, keeps the advert near the top and people seeing lots of replies equate this to lots of interest so therefore try and jump in to buy the motor before others. The good bit about NOT advertising on eBay is that people will turn up with cash knowing how much you want, and there's generally (but not always) a quicker sale.

I've got the potential buyer here - he's been looking over the car for 1/2 an hour without actually starting it up. HUpdate: AND no he doesn't want it.Now I know a 'viewing' is what it is, but christ, what were you expecting? "It's had a rear end shunt". NO IT FUCKING HASN'T.2nd update: He's 'fiddled' with the badge on the front, enough to make it come loose, and now it's gone missing on the roads somewhere.:evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil:

Aw, a happy ending. The bloke who owned the car for the majority of it's life and has been tracking it down for a while is picking it up on the weekend! Going to a good home.Sorry for my moaning.

Posted

Some geezer rang me up last night, he's just bought my pick up truck! You'll all be pleased to hear that he paid £700 for it, not the £1600 as it was eBayed at.

Posted

Excellent news, Bo1, so after getting to you and getting the truck home, ebay selling fees and so on, that lad has made a grand profit of approx -£12.83. Get him on 'The Apprentice', his business acumen is clearly winnar.

I'm getting the horrible feeling I'm getting messed around by a possible buyer. After being messed around by people with absolutely no interest in the car, I get in touch with the original owner who simply must own the car again. Was meant to come up last weekend - I get a phone call on Saturday saying he can't come up as he's busy. He also can't come up the weekend after, as he's busy (Bank Holiday), but CAN come up the following weekend, as he's NOT busy. He's serious though, as he said he'll send out a cheque next day delivery on Monday which I should have on Tuesday. Yes, that's right, I'm still waiting to receive it.I'm still holding out as who is going to buy this fucking stupid car? I'll never buy something as crazy or stupid again, you just can't sell them.

Posted

You are getting messed about. The guy does not have the cash (or the courage), but is too chicken to say so, and 50% of his brain would still actually like to buy it back, so by keeping you hanging on he is leaving himself a 'lifeline', i.e. an outside chance that he may yet end up owning it again. Assume he will not buy it, he almost certainly won't.

Posted

I think so, although an angry buyer did ring up after emailing claiming he didn't know what happened. I know he's bullshitting as he supposedly sent it special delivery. Anyone knows you get a tracking number to see where it is (and it's insured £500). Even working in a mail room for two years, sending out numerous SD's everyday, not one went missing. I was too withered to argue as he's sent out another one today.

Posted

If he sends a sizable non-returnable deposit then fair enough. Until the cash is in the bank the cars still for sale!

Posted

Yeah, although, he's coming up next week, around the time the cheque will clear.

I'm fairly trustworthy, but what should I look out for (post-cleared cancelling cheques, etc)? Bit of a pain, I just really want to see it gone, as much as I like it.

Wasn't there a scare about cheques being cancelled by payer long after having been issued?

Can you take his cheque payment, keep hold of it (i.e don't cash it in) and then hand it to him back when he arrives and ask for cash instead, obv. letting him know this in advance?

I have no issues in getting shot of my cars

My Sister always takes them :D

She's had 7 of my last cars :D

Have you got a spare sister Ayd?

Dunno about cheques after they have been cashed, but BACS payments can be recalled.
