If they think you'll check they'll replace as agreed, if there's a chance you'll not they'll tell you it's been done when it hasn't.

10%.

If I made 10% profit on every car I've ever sold, I'd literally have enough money put aside to buy three or four pork pies with black pudding in.

The other factor is that many of the cars that they were selling were much more expensive.  I think that they took the Jag in part ex for something else (the salesman said a £20k BMW, but it had a private plate that moved to a 911 according to HPI).

I think sometimes with PX cars that if a car doesn't quite fit in and they made a good profit on the car is was PXed for then they are happy to just get rid of with little or no fat on.

Who wants an £8k Jag with dead AC anyway?

I've only ever haggled once, and it was accidental. I've never haggled on a car I've bought. Test drove a Kia that was three years older than that Fiat I had, similar mileage, FSH (same) and up for £3500. It needed brakes all round and the front left wheel sounded like it was going to fall off, the interior plastics were scratched to death. I have learnt the hard way to buy 2nd hand cars from forecourts on the condition they are at at that time of test drive as promises to fix things never materialise or you get messed about for weeks.

The guy appraised my car (which was pretty much immaculate inside and out), asked loads of stupid questions and then offered £900 for a car that they would have put straight up for £3500 easily. I didn't want the car anyway because of the faults, but the trade in was the clincher. I told him there was no way I'd trade it in for that, even WBAC had offered £1500 and the Kia was rougher than the car I had, tried to get away basically! He didn't take that well and got in a right huff saying WBAC would knock it down to £1200, I pointed out that I'm still £300 up on his deal. That went down even worse and he went into a bigger huff, asking why I thought I could get back in trade in what I paid for it a year ago (dunno where these 4 year old £1500 cars are, which was all I was wanting) but offered to match WBAC's offer if I signed there and then. No thanks, mate.

I'm no gypsy, but I haggle on most things. Cars, TVs, shoes,...always cars. I try and do it in a friendly way though. My wife hates being around when I buy anything.

Well done Nutjob on the buyage. Looks very nice.

Me too.  I also know for certain that some dealers deliberately don't fix things on the basis that if/when you insist later they can claim on their insurance based warranty - I was asked to fill in a warranty claim for faults on one car I bought from a dealer that were present at test drive and they had promised to fix prior to delivery.  The private seller I bough one car off told me he'd taken it back to the garage with a leaky sunroof and they'd had to strip out the interior to fix it - but asked him to sign a claim for a replacement alternator as the sunroof work wouldn't be covered.

Nice one, you're happy and that's all that matters. It's an ace looking car, too.

That looks nice. Glad you got sorted in the end. Hopefully you'll list it up on here in 10 years time when the price has dropped to shite level. Make sure you look after it!

Last 'decent' car I bought at a garage, the salesman was giving it all the usual quiz about your family, job etc. I politely told him nothing, knowing it's either to distract you or steer your ideas. Then he starts with all this bull shit about how his valeter used to take the seats out of the car when he cleaned them and that there'd be a service included. Knew for a fact he was talking out of his arse as it hadn't been serviced when I picked it up. Didn't matter to me as I was planning on doing it myself anyway, knowing for a fact he'd be trying it on.
