The Autoshite spec Triumph thread

At the price of the clutch seals I'd give that a shot before replacing the whole unit, I've heard grim tales about the quality of reproduction ones.

Looks like a tidy car, nice to see those raised digit numberplates. Higher spec Dolomites actually got larger ash trays in the front doors!

I have a receipt for a slave from less than two years ago so sadly think it's one of the long list of high quality repros flooding the market at the moment. I have measured the bore and it's 7/8 so assume the replacement seal kit will fit even if it's an aftermarket one. I need a few bits and most of them are from Rimmers but I would get the slave from ANG as I have heard they are a bit better so may just bite the bullet and go for the seal set whatever as it's only a fiver so not the end of the world if it doesn't fit.

I love the idea that higher spec cars got bigger ashtrays, presumably the owners were presumed to be better off and therefore could afford to smoke more!

Bigger Dollies belonged to people who smoked cigars not roll ups :)

ANG stuff is decent.

I have ordered a new slave and will get a seal kit and keep the other as a spare. Will also get some pics up if it stops raining!

Yeah! Moar pics!

Oh, talking of pics. Dashes off to the i10!

The access is amazing. It took about half an hour to get the cover off and you don't need to take the seats out contrary to what the Haynes book of lies would have you believe.

If the clutch needs changing taking the seats out does make it easier.

That engine bay is gonna look a whole lot cleaner soon. Oh hell yes.

Woahhhhhh, WTF? Excess spring content! Now that is just errrrm.

Have you got any ATF?

strangely I think I have, my father in law brought me a load of his old fluids a few weeks back but I can't remember what I did with it. What were you thinking?

I know, it's great isn't it. I can only presume the accelerator was too light or didn't return well so this was added. Once the clutch is playing I will drop it off and see what it's like without it.

That's hail not snow, never seen as much come down in one go. It was much worse than that but I was having my dinner so had to wait to take a pic.

ATF is a good fluid to use when topping up the carb dashpot.

Clive, it might be prudent to order a new rocker cover gasket by the look of it :)

on my list in Rimmers basket, will order a few bits tonight once I have finished going over it today but mostly going to start looking at paint today.

Cool! That is a really decent car. It will look ace when it has been fettled.

I do believe you got a bargain in all honesty.

Thanks mate, I have spent a couple of hours going over some paint this morning. I let in some metal on the wing and sorted that, my small spray gun has arrived yet so ended up brush painting the top but only for protection and will sand it back and so it properly once I get a chance. Also cleaned up and sprayed a couple of sections underneath that had peeling paint but were solid underneath. Then looked at the inside door bottoms and got rid of the rust then painted. For someone who normally hates doing bodywork and painting it was thoroughly enjoyable morning!

Just realised I forgot to check whether it's the early or late type air filter.........

And refit chrome trim and get a locking petrol cap......

Be careful about the locking petrol cap - forgive me if I'm stating the obvious but it must be the correct one. Some tanks are vented through the cap and I found this to my great cost when I put on a locking cap which was not meant for the car - the fuel tank vacuumed itself in!

I really struggled to find anything, a guy on the dolomite forum has come to the rescue, at a not small cost though. I still can't find a clutch master cylinder cap anywhere which is a real pain. I am sure loads of different ones would fit but how do you know which ones?

The original filler cap might say 'vented' on it, or the workshop manual could have information on it? Failing that, a genuine locking petrol cap marketed by Unipart/Leyland for the model of car would be a safe bet. You could always drive a short distance with the new filler cap on, stop the engine and remove the cap whilst listening for an inrush of air.

I had the same with my MGB GT, I had to open it once a day or it would stutter and die. I eventually solved it by drilling a 0.6 mm hole in the filler neck right at the top. The cap that the dolomite forum guy has has come from a similar age car so should be ok.

I looked at those bit if I put in the details of the car it says it's not compatible. I know there were different master cylinders fitted across the range but don't know it the parts like the cap are cross compatible.

I have just put in an order for a load of bits ready for the service day planned for next Saturday, so filters, a hose, steering bearing, fan belt, rocker gasket and a couple of other bits are on their way.

It's giving conflicting messages. Might be best to email them. Looks right to me but best to check.

Hope the weather is going to be decent :)

Forecast is crap but then it was for yesterday, plenty of time for it to change. Forgot to say that I had a proper nose at the rusty light and noticed that one corner was broken and badly filled with silicone. That explains why one is ok and the other well rusty.

Snow, blizzards and floods would not deter me. Because white Dolomite!
