Mondeo Diesel smoking

A pal has a Mondeo TDCi, aware that this is likely an injector fault/fuelling, but it smokes slightly in a morning, then soon settles down to running well. Bit of a 'how long piece of string' question, but can they run like this for some time before giving up the ghost or is it a sign of imminent FTP?

White smoke? Could it be the turbo on the way out? Although that would likely happen under acceleration rather than just in the morning.

 

As it's a TDCi I reckon it's safe to assume an injector fault.

As it is likely injector fault can they go for thousands before they pick a seven?
