I know blue and red cars are buggers for fading , how about yellow?  Number of Broom yellow? Fiats with mismatched panels or bumpers is amazing .

Wanting some A77AG  19K512  Jasmine yellow for my fiesta , i've bought 3 , 1 litre cans ,non of which match... Even matched a swatch but it seems miles out . Should i use white primer instead of grey ?

Early water based paints of any colour were prone to fading, I'd use white primer with yellow..................not that I've got any idea why.

I think the coverage is weak with yellow paint, so if you use dark primers (red, grey, black) it takes a lot more paint to cover it, the edges of panels, corners etc don't cover well, and the colour of the primer/base coat tends to alter the top coat yellow shade.

White primer I would think will work best as it's a lighter colour than the yellow top coat.

Mix the three cans together, spray whole car while muttering "mismatch now you bastard" under your breath.

There really aren't enough yellow cars in these modern times.

I was kind of thinking about this last night at work.

Reading danthecapriman's thread about changing the capri's colour, from silver to bronze to blue. What has happened to car colours?

Colours now seem to be white, silver or black or variations of these colours, and have you seen the price £525 to have a  nissan qashqai of colour. Can i have one without paint?

When i left school i went to work at GKN autoparts,as a parts pissboy. With in 2 weeks of starting the paint mixer lad had done a runner to the bookies with the cash takings, lost it on a horse and was sacked.

So no paint mixer, would i like to do it?Hell yes.

So 17 years old and a whole paint mixing booth all to myself.I was sent to PPG in Birmingham,to train.I was the pig in shit i found i had a eye for colour matching, then i passed my test, got the use of a van and would go out to garages for any paint problems they had.

At least there was colour, variations on red, blue, yellow and bronze. Not now pahh every thing was better in 87.

Was that at Ladywood down the end of a road backing on to a shopping trolley filled canal?

I did a few paint courses there always a good time.

I reckon its a conspiracy that the car companies charge a fortune for decent colour options. As they're all under finance, no-one wants to spend more for a different colour ...they'd rather spend their budget having electric rear windows on their Golf.

By doing this the Manufacturers are able to ensure that the residuals are kept for the finance companies trying to resell these things.

Yellow is notoriously bad for matching and, in some cases, prone to fading.  Primer type does make a difference, yellow is almost always quite an opaque colour no matter if you're using car paint or acrylic artist paints or whatever.  The big bonus to yellow is that it hides a multitude of bodywork sins.

yellow is a complete pig to match on a brand new car let alone one thats 30 years old and probably seen its fair share of action and sun over the years

as said mix all the 3 cans together and use white primer , if you want it spot on then you will either need to be awesome at tinting or blend it ,  so for example if youre painting the wing then grey scotch pad the door and waft some fresh paint into the door edge then clear coat over the whole door

I've used all the tins ,none left .. but having seen the youtubes on blending silvers with mixing  laquer with paint , and spraying into adjacent panels ,I will give this a go. Not sure it works with solid colours though?

i didnt say mix it and yes it will work , ive been a painter sinse leaving school

obviously the clear coat needs to be the same type as the yellow or for future jobs order basecoat and clear

Glad i'm not alone. It's really getting me down. (well, not really.)

I play spot the exciting car colour with sc junior. Sit there in the window watcing the busy ring road crawl past.

grey, grey, white, grey grey, black, really dark somber vw blue, grey, white, grey.

Then you look at a street scene of the 70's. So many loud, garish, wonderful joyful colours. Even later into the early 90's there were some cracking colours - I remember my geography teacher having a brand new astra in what can only be described as snot yellow.

What happened? Where has the joi de vivre gone. Why do we have to live in this monochrome world?

I agree, bought a "Sicilian Orange" mk4 panda so I could get an interior with matching panels, seats etc. Maybe it's because people play it safe for selling on, don't give a stuff, this one is going to be kept forever. (Or until the facelifted one comes out....).

On t'other side of the coin.....I hate all this black stuff being around because old 50s stuff doesn't stand out any more!

It used to be rare to see a black'un - it was either a hearse, limo or a Mk1 Consul.

In contrast to this, the guy doing the mixing scheme at the factors we used was nicknamed 'Blind Pugh'

Primered lots , and guide coat rubbed down ... what grade paper ,i've used a worn 400  orshould i go  finer still ?

Go for 800 and then 1200. Halfords sell it, just go really liberal with the sanding until you can't feel resistance, it won't take long but it's good to get it nice and flat.

Also use soap and hot water all the time until the floor is drenched, don't let it go dry, it'll scratch it.
