Shirley Knott Posted June 15, 2019 Posted June 15, 2019 I really like the little Pug....All that graft to get the handbrake light to work properly would test the patience of a saint though, and that's ignoring the other jobs. Hat purposefully doffed to you for getting stuck in! The Moog 1
The Moog Posted June 15, 2019 Author Posted June 15, 2019 Thing is that it is pretty easy to work on - there is nothing to them, which is part of the charm Only annoying things are 1) old plastic it is pretty brittle 2) a mix of torx and cross head screws Shirley Knott 1

The Moog Posted June 16, 2019 Author Posted June 16, 2019 This morning I thought that I would see if I could fix the dash lights The back of the binnacleThis is the feed for dash lightingCleaned carefullyReinstalledDidn't make a jot of difference. Voltage is just millivolts so not enough to get lights working. Continuity is good. At this point I noticed smoke wafting from the back - the handbrake light bulb had gone as well plus stop light. I think this might have been the original issue. Pulling some of the bulb holders shows thisSo looks like a new binnacle is probably the best best to fix it all.
NorthernMonkey Posted June 16, 2019 Posted June 16, 2019 It’s only a really basic circuit....if we aren’t bothered about originality, just fit the bulb holders without the circuit and solder hard wiring to the relevant connectors?
The Moog Posted June 16, 2019 Author Posted June 16, 2019 That might be a plan. There is some melty bits on the track but testing continuity shows it is all connectedTesting continuity on the back highlighted that some of the bulbs weren't making proper contact due to manky tracks and quite a few of the bulbs have blown. Cleaned up the tracks and that improved things. Ordered a load of new bulbs so will swap them out before ordering another binnacle.
The Moog Posted June 17, 2019 Author Posted June 17, 2019 Minor victory this morning. The golf buzzes at about 50 mph which goes away when you push the dash. It is one of those noises that once heard, doesnt go away. This morning I stripped the front fascia out (about 15 min job) and tightened all the screws I could find. Trip to work this morning showed the buzz has gone ... very pleased and a small victory. Sadly I am suffering from Shiters Itch - the car is great, does everything I need it to, fsh and been well looked after ... but i keep getting tempted to change it. Ignoring the fact I have a 205 in bits, a Rover being fixed elsewhere, Mx5 that wants some love. scdan4 and Shirley Knott 2

The Moog Posted June 21, 2019 Author Posted June 21, 2019 I bought a set of track tyres off GM for the little Mazda but the alloys were a bit crispy. The tyres kept going down and I couldn't use them for Autotesting as not on the approved list. I have got a spanking new set of rainsports to go on, so took the opportunity to do a quick refresh Before Sanded with hand sander, wire brush in drill, wire wool and wet and dry paper. Getting the loose stuff off resulted in this2ps to cover the bolt holesThen couple of coats of primerYou can see before at the top, during on the right and primered at the bottom When it dried it has pulled a bit more of the paint off so I will scrape that off tomorrowThey are going to be black as I have been informed it will look best. Shirley Knott Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Those wheels are Enkie's, quite sought after on the basis of being expensive at the time as they're well made, tough and also light. Well worth the effort to refurb them!

Well worth the effort to refurb them! They could do with proper sandblasting and then a powder coat. This though should cost me £40 and a few hours which leaves money for shiny things Shirley Knott and stonedagain 2

The Moog Posted June 22, 2019 Author Posted June 22, 2019 We left the wheels primed last night andeft to go off. Today was time to do the colourI bought a waterproof table cloth to try and protect the bench a bit more. It was a partial success Primed wheelsStarting to dust some coatsDoing the underneathAlso did the centre caps with a little of colour funkCome out alright. Definitely 10 yarders it not bad. I also picked up a pair of lower front arms to sort out and poly bush to fit. These are miles less rusty than last lotso not going to do too much. Took off the balljoint and other boltsQuick go over with wire wheel and brake cleaner Then the glass reinforced chassis paint to protect themCouple of coatsLooking good - need polybushing and then is ready to swap over. Also did the ramps I was given by my neighbour. They had rust spots so wire brush back and then coated in paint to give them another 50 years of life.b dome, Uncle Jimmy, Shirley Knott and 8 others 11
