Dont think this subject has been posted before...

 

As some of you guys from Leicester on here may remember, there used to be a scrapyard where trains were finally laid down to meet their maker. The place, owned by Vic Berry, was a fantastic place & a bit of a local landmark. It suffered a catastrophic fire in 1991 (I think) & had to be closed down due to the colossal amounts of asbestos. Of course its now sadly just all cheap housinng & call centres. Progress, tsssshk.

 

Anyway, I thought I'd put on a few imaged I nicked off the interweb as I'm sure you'll find it quite fascinating....

One of my regrets is not seeing this for real. While I lived in Coventry, I took a trip up there on the off chance the yard might still be operational, but its now a housing estate.

Between the ages of about 12 and 16 I spent many a windy afternoon on a platform, or on the hills overlooking Tinsley or Toton depots with binoculars. I even dug out my old 'Platform 5 Locomotives and Coaching Stock' books recently, got 1991 and 1993 all neatly marked off I'd like to think I wasn't your average spotter, but I do still have a fairly unhealthy interest in what passed for regular working locos back then, the class 31s and 47s were everywhere and 20s were still working through Toton. 58s were recent and 60s were pretty new too. I even had a few favourite level crossings on the ECML where you were guaranteed a few 43s and 91s and then local sprinter services in between.

Yep, must admit I did watch the coal trains come through Worksop station as a lad. Mainly all 47's & 56's, with a smattering of 31's, 37's & 20's. didnt take numbers down or anything, just quite fascinating as a 9 or 10 yr old.

Worksop eh? Just t'other end of the new-fangled Robin Hood line from me, although that's lacking anything interesting apart from drunken idiots falling onto the rails on a saturday night.

Nahhh, I think it goes with the teritory. I like all things large and mechanical. I have got to raid my dads loft and look for the slides he has f grandads traction engine, bought in the 60's for about £20 or £30 and restored he used it to promote his shop and untill about 1979 was a regular sight aoround North road.Actually I think he just used it as an excuse to spend long hours in the shed and piss about with other old blokes drinking beer, smoking tabs and talking bollocks mostly.
