Interesting car for daughter No.1

If insurance is going to be an issue forget Alfas.

I don't know about this, I think she has 5 years NCD.

Daughter no2 has a Beetle 2.0. It was £100 a year cheaper to insure than a Hyundai Getz. They just make it up..

Alfa's will come into the modern classic and one would have cost me the same as the green Rover 214 to insure.

Watch out for the cambelt intervals on the alfas.

They halved them (to iirc 36k/3yrs) as so many snapped far too early.

I'm in a not dissimilar position, in that my wee Clio is going to have to get passed on sometime, and I'd like something the next size up.

Neighbour of ours has a Y reg Seat Leon 1.6S that I've expressed an interest in, and I know Focuses are basically good in that sort of spec. Pref without diesel.

So that's my two bob: late 90s - early noughties Leon or Focus. Maybe Civic too, but none of the sporty models, that way lies madness.

On the Civic Mk7...

Bare in mind that the Civic 3 door Sport isn't really that sporty... It's just a 1.6 with a type-r style bodykit. Which means you can have the "type-r" look, but without the type-r insurance. The 1.6 isn't particularly slow, but its certainly not type-r quick.

You also get the Type-S which is 5 door but with less power than the type-r (iirc around 150bhp). Then of course the Type-R is the 3 door with 200bhp.

Civic Mk8 (spaceship) is completely different again. 5 doors come in 1.8 petrol/2.2 diesel - both similar performance at ~0-60 of 8s with a trim level of SE/Sport/ES/EX that vary the amount of toys. 3 doors come as a type-s and type-r (type-s GT adds extra toys) with either 1.8 petrol/2.2 diesel/2.0 petrol - 2.0 petrol is the same type-r as before, and the other two engines are similar performance as the 5 door.

You also get the 1.4 in the mk8, but too slow to be remotely interesting. Also usually on all the povo spec versions.

I'm sure i've seen the odd 3 door with type S badges on the back too, so presumably that lovely little chain cam 2.0.

Certain I've seen that too. I know they're not properly quick - and I was thinking from the point of view of the basic Leon - but they look the part, so end up getting hammered in the hands of third division McDs car park warriors.

3 Door mark 7's never came as a Type-S, only the spaceship mark 8's did. Unless someone stuck a type-s badge on it.

The 3dr mk7 Sport badged looks like this though:

She really likes the Twingo (above) but, she's (understandably) worried about LHD & she did an online quote for insurance & came in at £750 as compared to £300 on the Clio. She is going to try phoning her own insurance company, but won't get in until too late today.

As regards most of the above, she has decided she doesn't want anything much bigger than the Clio for parking in the streets (free) at Brighton. She also doesn't want a convertible of any sort as I'd already suggested Pug 307cc or 206cc and various Saabs.

I can see her ending up with either another Clio or a Pug 206.

Thank goodness for that. The last four pages have not been in vain then?

Sorry and all that if it's the case!

Perhaps the problem is, I would like her to have something interesting more than she would. Still working on the Twingo, also does anyone know if the Tomcat has 5 seats or 4?

My 2003 Seat Ibiza is a nice little car 4 door 5 seat, plenty around. Mine is 1.2, 3 pot flavour and goes ok.

Its needed only service items and carries me, kids and a boot full of crap all over.post-17510-0-48712500-1453487107_thumb.jpg

More expensive, but I still reckon they're cheap...

Also Megane Convertibles can be had cheap.

But if she likes the idea of a convertible, imo, it has to be an mx-5 (just check for rust on the sills and arches).

After that , new Twingo, I have found this one for what looks to be a good price. She's out again so have to wait until tomorrow to find out what she thinks

I've given up with mine, she's now come up with the superb idea* of buying a brand new, yes effin brand new latest Civic Type R at some £30k, thats 300hp driving the wrong wheels WCPGW.

Me and her brother have tried to steer her in the direction of Scooby cos at least its got more chance of gripping the bloody road but apparently they aint 'in yer face' enough, kinell...have you see the bloody Civic i'm talking about, its gopping and the front bumper which is inches off the road looks about a grand alone, i forsee many tears but she's a determined sod and if i try to dissuade her she's guaranteed to do it.

And you think you've got probs FC....where's the bloody double face palm smiley when you need it.

I absolutely love the new civic type R! I prefer it to all the latest super hot hatches (which seem to all have at least 300bhp).

Stuff like the new Golf R, BMW m135, etc just don't do it for me. If you've got an insane hot hatch then, IMO, you want to show that it is one - which the crazy styling on the ctr does. I mean you don't get a chance to use even a quarter of the performance normally.

With the bland, slightly tarted up styling on the Golf R, you could get a 1.4 golf, stick a R badge on the back+exhaust and 99% of people wouldn't even know otherwise...

Might also be that I've had a diet of civics over the years. My parents had 3 civics when I was growing up and I've personally owned 2 in my 12yr driving career... 5yrs on the first, currently on 4yrs on the latest. :P

With the way the leasing deals are going on atm, if she bought it hard cash, then it looks like they're expecting them to hold their value a bit.

I have been thru all this with my Daughter, and am not surprised just about all suggestions from Autoshiter blokes have bombed out, as all mine did :-P

She wound up with a 2008 Pug 207 diesel sport i got off a mate emigrating which was a proper snip as he let her pay in monthly installments for two years and a decent sized downpayment from me, but up to then we were at an impasse, as all my sensible suggestions fell on deaf ears, and probably still would, as I am well old innit

So really it's going to be french or maybe a Focus if she learnt to drive in one, as the ladies love all the cars they have been forced to drive, as everything else is out of budget or rubbish for singletons ;-)

I think when you've reached the point of shelling thirty grand on something, it's gone beyond the basic remit of functional transport, and is more of a statement.

My sis is the same. Apparently tried a BMW 330, declared it 'a bit shit' and bought the Bini Cooper S she'd gone to the dealers for. To be fair, she can drive a bit, can afford it, and gets good personal leasing deals through her work.

Personally, I couldn't be doing with the hassle. Girls in fast cars are a magnet to certain types of cock wobbling bellends. If I ever can afford to run something fast, it'll be unobtrusive!

OK! I concede defeat on the biggest daughter & car probs! I have to agree the latest Civic is hideous especially in Type R flavour.

The parameters keep changing! She has just "discovered" some money her Grandma invested for her and is now considering this (what is the "professionally fitted white vinyl roof" hiding?)

Looks to me like it's hiding a badly fitted sunroof.

I thought she needed 5 seats?

I've had 8 people in a Mini no problem! You could be right about the sunroof. I have to say I'm a bit concerned about the amount of maintenance a Mini needs, I seem to remember oil change 6000 miles, grease ball joints/ radius arm 3000 miles plus they rust for fun.

She keeps changing her mind about how many seats/doors, but the need to be pretty small for parking seems to be constant. Sometimes you can't tell what you really like until you rule out what you don't.

Get five adults in a Mini no probs: two in the front, two in the back and David Bowie in the ashtray.

Other half's family have a blue N reg Mini that's effectively a pool car. It baled her bro out when his Pug 308 diesel FTP'd for the umpteenth time.

And yet...their collective enthusiasm for the thing blinds them to the fact that it's the neediest, most garage happy car they have! Almost any conversation starts "Aye it's a great wee car, but..."

I can see why they're so loved, but dear lord, they're hard work. And likely to break your heart or credit card at some point.

Herself wants a late Cooper, but trying to find a good affordable one isn't the easiest task.

Yeah, I know. Last mini we had there were 4 people and a dog in it and we stopped and picked up another 2 people from the side of the road because their car was broken. That was all before OMGSAFETY though.

Most I've had in the Clio was six. Left with four, following the sports club's old Citroën Synergie beater, which refused to come home under its own steam. It was only twenty miles, but with six of us plus kit bags etc., it wasn't quick.

Some bright spark replaced the Synergie with a 'bargainous' Pug 806 (?). There's a sweepie on how long it lasts.

Just to stay O/T, how about a Ren 5? MK1s are quite stylish, and all of them are quite spacious and practical. Dunno how that goes with the budget though.

Just had a look at R5s, every single one ever made seems to have been a GT Turbo!

Yeah, noticed that too. Wouldn't mind one myself, but they're well far into the liability category.

Who had the baby blue MK1 5 they got from Leboncoin on here? I've not been on regularly the last wee while so I've missed what happened to that.

Not that I'd normally suggest a trip across La Manche, but Brighton is close enough to make it possible.

Mind you, there must be non turbo 5s left here. Surely London would be a prime place to look for one?
