Bonnet scoops

My first car, an 850cc R5L, had one, and for a very good reason!.

The bonnet catch jammed, which was a total ballache because of the forward opening bonnet. After much thought I decided the only way I would be able to get at it would be to cut a hole in the bonnet. Serious business, then, but I worked out that if I cut through the slots which fed the heater I would be able to get a plastic scoop off a later GTL to hide the carnage I'd wrought with my trusty grinder. £3 from the scrappers, and no-one was ever any the wiser :-D

My P4 and Morris 10 both have bonnet scoops. You open them with a lever under the dashboard and get fresh air. Its the way forward.

Some Peugeots and Citroens used TMICs without a bonnet scoop, albeit in a relatively low state of tune.

I can see why a 300bhp Impreza with a TMIC needs all the air it can get, and a 90bhp Peugeot can make do with a grille scoop.

The air was ducted on the underside of the bonnet from the grille at the front - next time you see one have a look at the underside of the bonnet, its quite a neat soloution to getting cool air to the intercooler

My 306 had a secret scoop on the underside of the bonnet. Better than shouting about it.

Damn, beaten to it.

More scuttle than bonnet. <Pedant mode off>

Scuttle it is, but me Sunbeam has grills to grab air for the heater and carb, and scoops to let it out. They look very scientific but get stuck in traffic and it all goes into mentdown. This is only to be expected with a 2.3 l engine in a space originally intended for an 1100 sidevalve.

The modern car with the biggest ,most bonnet scoops and vents, has to be the Dodge Charger and Challenger Hellcat.

But I suppose if you make a 707 bhp family car you'd make sure there was as much air as possible going in and out .

Never mind the bonnet scoops, let's hear it for the W124 turbot dizzler front wing scoop.

I once stuck the bonnet scoop from an FSO Polonez onto a Mk 2 Fiesta - I expect for that travesty alone that there is a circle of hell reserved for me

The Sedona scoop was functional - fully sealed to the huge square intercooler. Quite a hot (turbocharged) engine bay under the bonnet, lots more heat soak than the V6 Voyager I owned also.

Raised louvres on engine lid - nasp has flush louvres - serve no additional purpose, mind.

Uk never got the turbo w124, the wing vent was introduced at the same time as the engines became 12v which upped the power to about 90bhp or something scary like that, am guessing the vent was redundant in our cars....

I've always thought that redwall tyres add a nice, understated styling touch.

And now, 40 years on, I still think so.

Doesn't the BINI have a fake one?

On 01-06 Binis it serves a purpose, on 06-15 ones it's fake, but they left it in as it was associated with the S by then.
