outstanding.

brightened my morning quite a lot reading this

So does that mean you've lightened the load by just driving the Rangie? It does look ruddy fantastic.

Yes!! It's a 200Tdi so not too thirsty and the good teacher had left loads of fuel in it

Yeah it's a 1993! My pal Jon has bought it as a keeper. He's wanted one since I told him the factory built two doors so late and with the Tdi option for Spain and Portugal etc. We started looking after the grey FC Jon had worked on sold to a geezer in Portugal and asked for it to be delivered. Using links from Mr Bollox's threads we found a few and then through mutual friends struck gold with the president of the Portugal RR Register! He found this one and we brought over some spares he needed which helped bring the price down. That said the euro is on its ass so this motor at 5k euros was a bargain IMHO.

Just got to Santander and having a beer in the sunshine. Have loaded the RR up now ready for the ferry here's a few pics:

I've been around old Range Rovers my whole life and this is exceptional! A few dings and some proper wheels and it'll be perfect.

Here's the godsend in the 110, not a ejector seat but a GKN overdrive - been in forth exclusively today using the OD as a splitter and low range to pull away. They say you don't need the clutch but being a landy it is so violent on the transmission if you don't it's wise to clutch in and out. I just keep forgetting it isn't pre select like my lorry!! Oops

Man, this thread is really not helping my long-term Landie WANTAGE !

How much is a decent Forward Control nowadays ? With "hedge find" Series IIIs now going for over £1K, an FC is starting to look reasonably priced !  I seem to recall they need a commercial MoT ? Can you drive them on a B licence ?

Welcome to England

They tend to go cheap if they need a bit of work but I think you would struggle to find one for under a grand. You can drive them on a car licence and MOT seems to be at the discretion of the tester and dependant on what body it has.

Wow! That really is one exceptional RR. Please tell me the proper wheels will be a set of the Rostyles it was on before. I reckon with a vertical slat grille and a private plate, most would be hard pushed not to date this as a 70's one. About as A grade an investment as I can think of IMO and I bet it would sell very easily for a nice fat profit to that guy that sells them out of the mews garage in London. Has he brought any of these spec. ones over?

Reminds me of this, which I think a friend had as a kid:

We are on the same wavelength!! I told Jon to show it to that Graeme Hunt fella once it is cleaned up as I think with a bit of effort, it is as good if not better than some of his stock.

Here's some things we have learned:

  • V8s are fairly rare in Portugal but those that are there tend to be 3.9 injection 5 speed manuals and flipping rapid
  • Anything pre 1985 is fairly rare, the direct opposite of the 'two door market' over here
  • Many many have been modified for off roading, though unlike in this country major body mods are fairly rare so it would be easy to "de-mong" one and they tend to be cheap
  • VM diesels are plentiful but beware as most if not all will have been imported already from more northern parts of Europe and therefore will have rust issues (see below)
  • Our portugese friends have a very different definition of 'rusty', we were shown a nice blue '92 that was "A bit rough". The bloody thing was damn near spotless on the inner wings, headlamp boxes and body mounts.
  • Four doors especially late 'soft dash' ones are very much cherished and command strong money, but again they are in a condition not common here since the damn things were still in warranty.

To sum up if you want one go for it before they all go!

Don't do this until you have another dozen or so safely repatriated to drip feed sell to him.

I live in that photo (really, you can see my flat in it...)

Was the girl cute?? She never turned round

I've been to the penthouse at the top of the Penis Lipstick Tower. Quite a dwelling I can tell thee!

Also, note the (I believe rare) use of directional traffic lights, as opposed to the congestion easing ones*) on the motorway network

Cros' post reminded me I meant to put a postscript to this tale.

The red RR is enjoying a cherished existence and has not had or needed anything apart from a cambelt change.

The engine we brought back - a Spanish built, 3.5 litre Santana six cylinder diesel - has gone into Frank the Series One. The engine is basically a stretched 2.25/2.5 diesel Landy engine, I've not heard of anyone else putting one into a "English" LR.

Frank looked like this a week ago

They are getting the ferry tomorrow morning bound for the Birmabright weekend in the Czech Republic. Wish I was going!!

I may have to repatriate a 3 door Rangey at some point from somewhere sunny...

Great to see all the old tatty panels going back on the Series One! I wholeheartedly approve of vehicles of this era that look like they've just been dragged out of a farmyard :)
