Volvo V70 diesel collection - not in advance, not live

My V70 TDI's heater was fine but I think the big direct injection diesel engine is too thermally efficient for a great heater - that's why a lot of modern diesels have electric heating elements for the coolant.

The belt kits can be expensive, you need to replace both the cambelt and the injection pump belt, if you shop around you can get both for well under £100 though. You should replace the crank pulley bolt while you're there, and the wee bolts that centre the pulley are really soft.

Dad's windows loader will sort that pesky win7 activation out, just press OK without putting a key in at the relevant screen and it'll install as a trial, then run the loader as soon as it boots.

That warning light seems to be telling you you have driven too slow.

It looks like a lovely, lovely car! Number 2, 7 and 14 please

Second that. If you ever decide to part with this via a raffle I'd be taking a punt on it so SnrYoof can have it as his WORKHORSE BARGE-O-MATIC.

This passed it's MoT today, it needed a bottom wishbone and a tyre which isn't bad going for a year's motoring.  Mileage is now 167,000 so it's done about 30,000 since I've owned it.  Earlier this year it had a cambelt and timing belt fitted but that's really about it.

If I was going to sell it, now is the time as it has a year's ticket.  It'll need rear pads soon but it continues to transport me to work every day, about a 55 mile round trip which is just over a gallon of diesel per day.  it seems to have settled at 50-52mpg for ages now which is pretty good.

Anyone interested?  And know how much it's worth?

I loved my one except the previous owner let his three Alsatians live in it.

Does it have cruise control? One of my 70 series did but the rest didn't.

This one doesn’t have cruise, it’s absolute poverty spec with no front fogs, no leather and no trip computer. It’s got climate control (not just Aircon) and heated seats but otherwise it’s base spec

Slightly interested here, (possibly more than slightly) any ideas on a price.

I'd be keen but I recently bought a 1997 V70 TDI in CD spec, with 236k and counting. Ace cars!

I'm pretty sure I have a cruise control stalk here for a fiver plus postage. The TDI are all fly by wire so I reckon that should be enough. I probably have a clutch switch too. No idea if it'll need a software change though...

Jeez, finding the value of these is tough!  There aren't many diesels with manual box around but looking at completed listings on ebay they seem to go for about £900.

Is that enough to get me an interesting replacement?

It is indeed, my last one was £300 because it was disgusting inside but 18 months of motoring for very little outlay was very welcome at the time.

£900 is probable fair but out of my reach at the moment.

In July I picked up a very tidy 2004 V70 D5 with 170k and no proof of a new clutch, flywheel and cambelt/wp at 145k. I believed the guy, everything added up. It needed an injector seal sorting, other than that it's spot on, with recent brakes all round, tyres with loadsa tread and a recent big service at a specialist. Price? £650.

In fairness, the typical price of something similar is 800-1100, this one was advertised badly and it's silver with cloth seats and a coalmine interior.

The old-shape 2.5D which we run was found two and a bit years ago for £770 and similar order, it's covered 50k with no more than a front caliper, discs and pads all round, handbrake shoes and rear damper mounts. The belts are due in 20k, the atf needs doing yesterday and four tyres are needed for winter. What's it worth? 600?

Having replaced your cambelt will make yours more saleable, if it's fault and rust free then the right buyer may pay 8-900. Great cars, better off not selling when they're worth so little! What else for the money provides the quality, speed, boot space and 45-50mpg?

That’s exactly what I’ve found, you can easily spend 4 grand more for something that’s much worse.

I think I’m turning Scottish :)

If you do your research and can tell a good'un from the rest, there's never been any need to spend more than 1200 or so if you want 70k/three-four years of reliable, cheap motoring in something smart, rot-free, comfortable and quick enough.

Generally it meant Mercedes, Audi, Citroen or Saab (never got along with rwd Volvos), nowadays it's Volvo or, well, not sure what from the noughties. Nissan Leaf is on the horizon perhaps.

The only cars I've ever spent more than that on have been really old ones which have been rising in value - why buy something which is going to depreciate thousands and go wrong as well as needing the usual?

Its very satisfying getting the real value out of expensively-built cars - it's very generous of those who spend many thousand more than Mondeo man, so you can have reliable and satisfying quality for a few hundred quid.

£4000 for a car you'll leave in car parks and use throughout winter? Madness
