Road tax question

Has anybody declared sorn? Do you get a shittogram from DVLA for having the audacity to cancel your DD?

Yes on both counts. Nothing to be too worried about; the alternative is to assume they will stop collecting the DD, in my cases this year ( 10 or so) they stopped collecting but IIRC there was a recent thread where willsonwilson got stung with extra payments in months following sorn.

Direct debits are the spawn of the devil! Sorry, B.T./British Gas/Eastern Electricity/E.E./numerous insurance companies; I DO trust you to provide telephonic/gas/electrical/mobile/insurance services but I do NOT trust your accounting or your internet security systems! By signing a direct debit & am giving you and anyone who hacks into your computer systems full access to my bank account! No way, Hosé!!

They're covered by a guarantee, I'd rather set up a DD that will refund if anything untoward happens than by giving out my card number where anyone can set up a payment and there's no way of cancelling it.

AOL used to take the 16 digit card number for monthly payments and were notorious for "forgetting" to cancel payments and the only way to stop them was to apply for a replacement card with a new number.

806 currently has no insurance because the policy is moved to SWMBOs new car.

It is parked on the drive so off public highway.

Do I have to SORN it immediately due to lack of insurance?  or can I wait until nearer the end of the month in case the new car explodes or something (then I could just re-insure it and it would already be taxed).

I have no intention to drive it without insurance but I also don't want an automatic fine from DVLAs supercomputer because it's not insured and not SORNed.

accounting is not relevant - if you cancel a DD and they call it the bank must return instantly - end of.  However you pay details will be on their systems if they get hacked - if they have your account and sort code there isn't much they can do and DD guarantee covers it.  If you pay credit card its no safer than DD

I've had emails warning me that I've cancelled the direct debit even though I've sorned the car and it's showing on the system as sorn.

Unless you're paying in hard cash all the time, none of your transaction info is ever totally safe.

With the insurance/sorn thing you should be ok until the end of the month but not much longer. You will get a warning first unless it gets seen on the road where they will just seize it. I sorned a couple of cars last month on the last day of the month. They still took the DD's but refunded them to my account within a fortnight with no hassle
