My old man has just put a deposit down on a t4 52 plate camper with the 2.5tdi engine in?

I am off to look at it weekend with him, it's up for mega bucks, but he really wants one so no changing his mind. it's apparently completely mint and has had the cambelt done this year.

Anything I should look for???

one with a 1.9tdi.

2.5 are generaly pretty poor reliability wise, not very frugal, and cannot be easily ned

I had one as a company van at the turn of the century - it was a rocket even without a turbo. I was the envy of the other 1.9 powered engineers in my 2.5 5 pot beast. So it should go well, pick up easily, even loaded (I had a cable testing current injecting rig in mine, weighed a ton). Should drive like a large people carrier rather than a van. Mega under steer with no brand tyres fitted as I found out after a new set of tyres.

The odd sized mirrors can be off putting mind.

320, in period (ie: new) it was more economical than the 4 cylinder ones on the fleet, thrash for thrash.

The engine is shared with the Touareg only and apparently the camshaft can be ruined unless EXACTLY the correct grade of oil is used.

Edit - I was thinking of the PD engine, the one with gear-driven camshaft.

Check when the diesel pump belt was last done, father in law's hadn't been done at the last service, it then snapped at 70mph, the pump instantly seized, stripped the cam belt and shattered the cam in 4 places. Total engine destuction.

It'd only done 190k as well. They don't make the like they used to.

Avoid one with a full dealer service history from JCB Volkswagen in Kent - this is twofold:

1) Because my colleague whilst sat at lights (right outside the Arsenal shop on the Seven sisters road) pulled away and snapped the belt, destroying half the engine. Said engine had, had new belts from JCB two days previously at great cost. Strokes chin...

2) Said quality franchise left the rubber service book stamp in another colleagues glovebox, said chap did a bit of home trading, he was rather pleased :)

likely so-but not with a glf spec tune on the 1.9:)

You can't get the 1.9 TDI in a T4 Transporter, I think it's because the 2.5 TDIs are in quite a low state of tune in the T4.

The 2.5 TDI is reliable enough but it's really crammed in a Transporter.

is it the aaz 1.9td then?

I find VAG engine codes mind-boggling, but it is a 1.9 TD with no intercooler or boost compensator on the pump.
