Saab Aero Hot Question

I no longer have much use for my VW T5 van, as I can rent a van locally for times I needa van for less than the cost of the tax, MOT and insurance I pay on the T5 each year. I have my Merc for wafting around in, so fancy something with a bit of "go" in it, and have been looking at whats available that fits my requirements (basically I need five seats)

I keep being drawn to the Sabb 9-5 Aero Hot (no later than the 2005 model) as they do seem to offer a lot for the money, and I can insure one for less than £200 per year (I am old!). I do know of the sump sludge issue, but is there anything else to look for? Or would I be better off going for a BMW/Merc/Audi? Or none of them?

Ovlov t5? Bugeyed cosworth scorpio is a surprisingly good motor, only available as an auto though plus they seem to attract engine rape tax.

I've always fancied an octavia vrs 1.8t, someone on here has a v5 toledo very competant cars. My brother had the same engine in a golf he loved it.

Thanks for the replies so far. I had a 9000 a few years ago, so am Saab shaped (at least to their seats). I need four doors (or the estate) rather than three doors, and Spiny Norman's car looks great, except it is a long way to go to collect, taking it's price into consideration,  and the travel costs will be high.

I've had the 1.8T Octavia VRS , but although the engine was good, I didn't gel with the rest of it. Couldn't live with the Scorpio's looks (nor that of a bug-eyed Subaru) and would prefer a maual rather than an auto. I've had a quick look around the web for the OvlovT5, but they don't seem as plentiful as the Saab, but a contender all the same. So best I look for a 2004-2005 model 9-5 then?

9-3s are pretty good too, I bought Vantman's one about 4 months ago and its been a pleasure to own and drive. It is the 'lowly' 1.8t LPT version and a slushbox but is plenty rapid enough for me. It has 4 doors and a big boot. Its also got the B207 (silver top) engine so shouldn't be succeptible to the sludging issues that affected the B204 lump.

Not sure about the price difference between a 9-3 and a 9-5 but the 9-3 is definitely worth a look.

If you are after performance there is a bloke in nottingham who can remap any variant to 220bhp for £80. Look on any of the Saab forums (fora?) and the name 'Noobtune' will crop up. I think he can squeeze even more out of the HOT ones but its not really my bag so don't know much more than this.

I am going to sell my 2001 9-5 2.3 lpt in about a week. It's a blue estate with grey leather.

Stacks of history including dump drop and clean. 4 matched bridgestones put on about 6 months ago.

They can be tuned with a noobtune for £100 to produce roughly same as aero.

Was going to ask around £600 for it if you are interested. I can even drive it to London for that price.
