My mum had an N reg 1.3 version. It was 100% reliable! never ever broke or had problems at MOT time. But not exactly the most exciting thing in the world and seemed to be totally worthless when sold on, even with lowish mileage.

They do make a good reliable daily runner though and can be had cheaply.

like cockroaches, after a nuke, these will survive and still run. its a 1.3 12v, so wont set your knickers afire but its a handy little thing for visits to aldi. (other supermarkets available.) space is good, trim is plasticy but rarely breaks. like many asian offerings of the time it will be soft but compliant like a real pair of jugs. the gear change is usually tight but gate throw is a bit long. the rest is good. brakes can be a bit sketchy if you drive like colin mcrae, or attempt to recreate the steve mcqueen puma ad. (remember that?)

the yoof here in oz love em, usually with huge wings and doof doof. usually ran on a shoestring. they really are the definition of austoshite.

4x114.3 stud if your keen to fit some nice wheels. or just add rspb sticker and tissue box. either way it will keep going forever.

i own its larger brother, the elantra. for an appliance its brill. and when you get up it late one night on your way back from that lass at the pubs place with the slightly short skirt and alluring eyes, it will suprise you..... bit like her really....

short version, buy it, add pez and revell in a great korean car.

A lot of Accents went as mobility cars so were pretty well looked after. There's a disabled lady round the corner from us who's had one in YIDDISH RACING GOLD from new. I told her I'd have it if she ever came to sell it (must have bought it from mobility or whatever).

She said she can't think why she would ever want to sell it.

Fair comment.

I had one for 3 days, 1998 S reg, Si trim, so it had a boot spoiler, electric front windows, power steering and central locking, was burgundy and had done 94K, it felt very tinny, but was OK, sadly the clutch was on the way out and was badly slipping, dangerous to try and pull out of junctions etc it was that bad, gave it back to my work and got my money back, but I'd have another if it didnt have an issue like that needing sorted.

Brother HH-R had one of these when they were almost new. I always forget that he had it, but it was likeable enough, the only thing that buggered up was the driver's window mechanism which is like a bike gear change cable setup.

My friend had one years later too, 5 door is shite brown, 1.3. I struggled to keep up with her on a trip back from Scotland when I had my 1.4 Rover 45. Can't believe that was nearly ten years ago.

Basically, do what they say on the tin. Good, honest, if dull, motoring.

I had a go in a early coupe once and was pleasantly surprised by it.

They oversteer on the limit

Then they roll over into a hedge

In my defence I was only 19....

My lad had the previous curvy shape in MVi form in his hooligan youth (not as he's much better now, must get it from his mother) followed by a Hyundai coupe F2 a year or two newer, in both cases they were the only two cars that he couldn't actually break.

He knows all about BHP's (his gen calls it brake) and the like and he reckons the engines of Hyundais of that era, before they became fashionable, didn't produce massive BHP figures compared with others instead the engines were tractable, he might have a point there, unstressed vehicles tend to last and those Hyundais certainly did.

MVi in either shape is a decent little motor with some easy and useful oomph.

I hired a 1.3 curvy Accent in Malta, Maltese roads of the time were fuckin diabolical but that car rode them without a murmer...in comparison we hired a Focus overrated shitheap  in Ireland for a cousins funeral, never again i did wonder if the thing had any springs at all my back's never recovered.
