Imperial ratchet spanners

Recommended Posts

Posted

With my impending Imp collection I've now realised I have two cars that use AF fixings.

This now qualifies for some tool buyage. I have a set of halfords pro metric ratchet spanners which are excellent, but it seems they have discontinued AF ones.

I'm looking for some reasonably good quality ones but have no idea what to buy, just wondering if anyone has any experience/recommendations.

Get down the car boot?

Most of my Imperial stuff is from yesteryear. Guy I used to work with was ex-army and had long given up tinkering with old cars, so he gave me his AF / Whitworth / BA stuff. Top notch old-school Britool, Elora, King Dick.

Cost me nowt, but then it didn't cost him nowt  ;-)

I have a set of king dick imperial ratchet spanners and they are excellent. It's also a good old fashioned British company owned by an ex bike racer Griff Roberts, nicknamed the king of Mallory for exploits on the mile.

I ended up with loads of imperial spammers, don't know why but I did. Ended up binning them. Unlike the sockets where you can use them for drifts or twatting over rounded off bolts.

Halfords ratchet spanners are made by Gearwrench, so if you are happy with your metric ones, have a shufty online for them.

I think ratchet spanners are a relatively modern invention.

I managed motor parts shops in the early 1980s and we sold them then, I still have a set but the ratchet is much coarser than the modern ones.

I have been in the garage and found one they are Kamasa and we sold them in sets of four different sizes.

I bought some Gearwrench AF / imperial ratchet spanners a few years ago and I have found them to be top quality.

Grind and file your metric spanners into imperial sizes, your time on this earth is far too precious to waste on metric nonsense, leave it behind, stick with the inches and your existence will be meaningful and your life improved beyond your dreams.

I have a huge collection of old britool and king dick imperial spanners but it's ratchet spanners I'm looking for.

Facom/Snap on are a bit out of budget but I have found Teng and will take a look at Gearwrench.

Looks like second hand might be the best way though.

Pah, the inclusion of a 5/16" and the lack of a 11/16" would forever drive me round the bend.
