Another talk me out of this please thread

Wasn't me. I'm saving pennies for something far less sensible.

I think the Athena was at the bottom end of the range so non DIRAVI. Red wine consumed so I'll sleep on it till tomorrow. I'm sure* it'd make an ideal everyday car and is just the sporty type grand tourer that I was looking for.

Virtually all all cxs have diravi apart from the first year of production (1974). Reflex was actually the base model. The Athena was plusher. All cxs are fine everyday, as long as you keep on top of the rust.

I've driven a manual steering CX2000. Awful: incredibly heavy and slow to steer. I doubt there are any of those in use anywhere unless Popeye has one.

Me too. Hence raising the question, as I remember going to "some remote place in Scotland" to get a "mint" CX - a white Athena, I've never seen a Reflex in the UK? I was amazed it lacked DIRAVI. Worse steering than a GS.

I like this extra information. Yes a CX would be my everyday car - normal insurance is cheap for where I live and I really miss a car that can cover distances comfortably. The BX of mine has been a wonderful tool and is almost the ideal car for me but I really could do with something with better "distance legs"

An XM would be ideal but insurance would be crippling for where I live.

Before you suggest other, more practical devices, tuff, I like citroens.

CXs are amazing. I prefer the 2.4/2.5 and autobox combination, ideally with fuel injection (I've had 25 Safari and 2400 Pallas, the latter being a South African repatriated model with early arches, aircon and carb). They're another league of robust for the era - sills like treetrunks, longerons underneath that distribute frontal accident forces. Only the door tops and bonnet support mounting show any weakness of engineering - the window frames rot out much too quickly and CXs with a slightly high nearside bonnet gap were commonplace.

Honestly can't see how an XM would cost more than a CX to insure unless your job is "XM racing driver and part time ramraider with a fondness for running over lawyered-up nuns".

Because insurance companies defy all logic. Cheapest quote was over two grand for an XM whereas for a CX, or a BX for that matter, was a smidgen over 300.

That's insane. Are you sure you didn't put a Syrian postcode in by mistake?

Also, if you like your cars froggy and fun, I know of a Xantia Activa looking for a new home for not too many pennies.

Scratched the activa itch a while ago. A strange combination of fun and dull at the same time.

FPB7 - I used my CX 2.4 petrol Auto quite a lot when I first got it, 7200 miles 1st year, 9400 miles 2nd year, 3200 miles 3rd year and then it tailed off, 24 mpg did not help and if you needed a part you had to search and send off for it, so it ended up just for shows etc. I tried a diesel CX but still only 33 mpg. I don't want to put you off but do go into it with your eyes open this is not going to be a cheap or easy car to run.

I would still say give it a go......

I may be basis check out the latter pages in thread "Six Cylinder Motoring Notes"

Don't worry, eyes firmly open on the potential pitfalls and costs of running stuff like that. Doesn't pay to be too sensible all of the time though?!

But actually, what you can see of it looks surprisingly good. Apart from the engine which looks like it was dredged out of a canal. Reckon the bootlid will be crispy under the trim from that rust-stained bumper.

There was a nice looking CX for sale in Cork, Ireland a couple of months ago - The area rep for the CCC sent a group email round with some pics. No price, and I don't know if it sold, but I can pass on the guys email address / number if it appeals?

It's a '79 Pallas 2.4 with the C Matic gearbox

"talk me out of this" threads only end one way - it's not my money/time/sanity so get it bought!*

* apart from if it's PU51DRY though. No one should buy that.
