GS/A Ami Rally

Went to the GS/A Ami Rally at the Rural Life Centre Farnham today. We were pleased to find the centre interesting with good exhibits & a lovely setting. There was a good turn out of GSs, Amis & DSs also a couple of 2CVs, BXs, ZXs & a CX & an XM (mine). A rusty Renault 16 also featured.

Saw a TR7 on a trailer on the way back too!

The side decal on that R16 has left me breathless.

Good pics! It's amazing that such an advanced car as a GS was ever offered in the Escort class - there's nothing which comes close today in anything under 100k. The McLaren MP412C offers similar attention to detail and a brilliant hydraulic suspension system. But it's intended for a millionaire rather than a schoolteacher.

The flat four must be one of the most undiscovered brilliant engines ever - its only real fault was that after a hundred thousand miles it would drip a bit of oil from (low pressure) oil pipes' O-rings which drained oil from the heads to the sump. I've driven a car with a 300,000-odd mile flat four with nothing done other than regular maintenance and the O-ring replacement. It went like stink and used no oil even when held at 6000rpm+.

Given that Citroën splurged most of its cash on the NSU rotary affair, it's amazing the air cooled ally four is so brilliant. Useless fact - they sacrificed economy for lower noise (petrol price in 1970 = 7p/litre).

There is rumour of a York to Cambridge journey in less than one hour forty-five with four up. Mmm.

I took my GS and won a prize. Yes “Shed of the Showâ€Â, they dressed it up with kind words like over came obstacles, worked hardest to get it here, came though challenges and contributed to GS life but I knew what they meant.

No wooden spoons were hurt during this award!

Farnham you say? Bollocks. That's only down the road from me.

The Ami panel van thing belongs to the guy I bought my Ami off.

I would have loved to go to that, but it's waaaaaaaay to far to travel. If they had a furthest traveled GS award, no doubt I would have won it.

Totally agree. My GSA 1300 was one of the best cars I ever had (before it de-constructed itself bodily) and with the 5 speed it could float along at 85-90 all day long (on my private driveway of course) and was as brilliant as the boxer in my T25 is shit. The diminishing purpose of the Citroen brand is a hurtful thing to see.

XR3i s were my favourites, they were faster (just) in a straight line on a motorway than a good G, but would vanish astonishingly quickly (in the rvm) when corners and imperfections appeared. The mentality of their drivers would usually lead them to (want to) murder their girlfriend when a rusty old Cit left them looking like the wheezy uncoordinated kid at sports day.

Damn, missed this and I have always admired Citroens. There's a Citroen gathering near Milton Keynes on 2nd weekend of September, looks like I will have to try attend that one.

I plan to be there but not with the GS as it has gone for bodywork following the shame of winning "Shed of the Show"!

Because it is only 5 miles from my home I plan to bring along as many of my Citroens as I can muster and maybe the one I don't own yet!

I'm old enough to recall when these (Ami's, GS's etc) were common sights on the road, looked different and interesting then and still do now. Really love the Ami van, don't think I've ever seen one of those outside France before.
