Would a small wire brush do the job ? Or strips of emery cloth ?

I just bought an Aldi power file for 20 quid and it's flippin brilliant. I use it all the time for the stuff the grinder can't get to.

However, that looks pretty grim how hard is it to get off? It looks like a candidate for shot blasting and powder coating,

Nah, a powerfile would be shite for that, they don't have enough of a "soft" section so you might as well use a flap disk on a grinder. I'm ready to sing the praises of a powerfile all day long but they aren't for tube.

You're best off getting something like that blasted. Phone round a few places and I bet you'll be surprised by how cheap you can get it done. We send stuff off at work for blasting and powdercoating and pay less than you could do the job yourself for once you'd paid for abrasives and a can of matt black.

If you really want to DIY it then knock the worst off with a wire wheel on a grinder to start with.

If it's mega crusty and you think a flap wheel on a grinder would make holes then you should just replace it really.

If there's a decent amount of steel left then go at the easy to access bits with a flap wheel. If you are careful you shouldn't leave too many digs or corners. paint strip disks are good, soft and barely touch the metal itself, but they are fairly dear and don't last all that long - you'll kill one in no time if you catch it on a corner.

To get into awkward corners long strips of emery cloth are the way to go - if you can get a good stroke with them you can actually do a lot of work quite quickly.

It has got that puffed out look, which is probably not a good sign.

I usually use a belt from a power file turned inside out round a drill chuck.........

Allegedly.

Dave-numbers is on the right track , get a roll of emery cloth and get stuck in

Power files are awesome, but can be a bit aggressive. Use a light band and don't use much down force.

Practical joke opportunity: swap out the bog roll dispenser at a club for one of these and listen to the drunk people scream

Also SotchBrite works really well, especially the mauve one. Awesome BMW build quality anyway
