Blasts from the past. Some more

Brilliant photos, I like the look of those pre or early post-war cars still going at a time when they may just have been seen as another old car.Its funny looking at the early 70's continental photos. When I went to the Balearics with my folks in the early 90's, there were still numerous examples of these cars, by then well over 20 yeas old, still in daily use. Funny then that there are almost no equally old cars from the 50's in your photos. Must show that owning your own car didnt become common until much later? My fave is the Ford Pop 8)

And I still think the shadowy one was a triumph

I absolutely LOVED being here!!!

Nah, I would have preferred the driver's seat!

Hi all! I've been shamelessly chatting up 55bloke to pinch these photos, as my partner and I were (until very recently) residents of Bangor, and the boy is so obsessed he has a website dedicated to the fair city!

All I can add is that there was indeed a successful Vauxhall garage, the premises were used for car related businesses from the time when cars began, until it turned into another Kwik Save (yes Bangor was lucky enough to have two!).

As for the cars, there's nothing exciting in Bangor now, except maybe a MK1 Cav in baby-sick yellow, a rat look MK1 polo and erm, my 2cv? While I was studying 2 2cvs and a GSA were all that got my interest, oo and a MK1 Escort, which I'd have loved to own, the rest of my peers had shiney new cars financed by the Bank of Mum and Dad, which I think is a loss for university carparks everywhere.

P.S. We don't have shops like this anymore, either:

[shameless plug]P.P.S. the teaching college was Coleg Normal, and anyone (or their mum) wishing to donate memories and photos would be welcome at www.bangorcivicsociety.org.uk [/shameless plug]

Ah, hello Louise! Thought you might enjoy this thread...Now, get up some pics of Seth the 2CV and his gorgeous brown interior!

Wow, what is this I see, are my eyes deceiving me or is this Autoshite's first ever female?? Or is it just a male with a female moniker? (that's moniker, not Monica!):D

Do you mind them putting up pics of your gorgeous brown interior Seth??

Think you could be right!

I've just about finished looking through all my old Bangor pics (or do I mean, old-banger pics?) and there's actually very few more shite spots- I must've got 'em all in my 1st year! I only found 2 more:

This Willys Jeep outside a hall of residence

Posted Image

And this Jowet Javelin, in the same place.

Posted Image

As a parting shot, as it were, from Bangor, here's a pic of my Cortina after it was rear-ended. The damage appeared superficial, and- as you can see- I'd made a start on patching it up. At this stage, I hadn't realised that the chassis was bent where it arches over the back axle, and the spring hangers badly damaged. In short, a write-off!

When I left Uni., I got my 2nd Mk 1, a '66 GT. Sadly, it was even rougher than it looks here, and terminal rot killed it within a year.

Posted Image

I have plenty more old spots from various locations back in the '70s, and will post some of those in a while.

Posted

Continuing now with a random selection of shite from a variety of locations.

First, a very tidy, if somewhat faded, Mk 1 2 door deluxe. Photographed in Liverpool in '76. I seem to recall an identical car was used in Brookside in the early years, but I can't find what it's reg was. Would be a nice coincidence if it was this car.

Posted Image

The 1st Mrs 55 Bloke was a Geordie girl, so I spent quite a bit of time on Tyneside. This amazing selection was for sale at City Road Garage, Newcastle, around '78. Can you imagine cars like these sitting on an ordinary, muddy forecourt these days?

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Amazingly, these were on a forecourt in Wallsend at the same time

Posted Image

Posted Image

I used to see this beautiful 3 window PA quite frequently when I visted my parents in Leeds round about 1980

Posted Image

Posted Image

It was on one such visit that I also spotted this beauty in a local pub carpark

Posted Image

On a holiday to Scotland in '78, my Mk 1 fetish was fuelled by these beauts:-

Lovely 2 door GT. Think Reggie might be more interested in what's parked next to it!

Posted Image

And this estate. I hesitate to use the word customised... tarted up might be closer!! Looks like 1600E Rostyles, random selection of lights, and strange front bumper.

Posted Image

Posted Image

After Uni, I settled in North Yorkshire for 20 odd years. This was a regular visitor to the street I lived in in Pickering

Posted Image

Posted Image

This is my brother's first Cosul Classic, also on a visit to Pickering.

Posted Image

Found this in Helmsley car park around '80. Can't imagine seeing a similarly scruffy Lotus these days

Posted Image

Posted

Around the time those pics were taken, we were also frequent visitors to Custom Car shows and Drag Race meetings. I dare not contemplate scanning all the pics I have from those, but I thought a selection of a few favourites may be of interest.

Shite in every respect is this Mini- can you imagine getting away with a paint job like that now?:lol:

Posted Image

I love this Vauxhall pick up. I think it was Steve Murty's first effort- he's now a stalwart of the Yorkshire Drag Way at Melbourne, I believe.

Posted Image

Jonn Dodds' famous "Rolls Royce"

Posted Image

Stunning '62 PA Cresta, which I'm sure I remember reading was an all new shell.

Posted Image

and possibly the most beautiful Consul Capri ever, at the same show as the PA.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Photographed at York Drag Way:-

Little Angel, a gorgeous Mk 1 Consul, with Rover V8 power.

Posted Image

Posted Image

This offends my eye more than I can say!! Why would anyone think this is an improvement?

Posted Image

F type Victor estates must have been pretty scarce even back then! This is beautiful. And, look at that reg number!!

Posted Image

Posted Image

as is this

Posted Image

This is what Top Fuel dragsters looked like in the '70s

Posted Image

Though VERY few of their drivers looked as good as Roz Prior!

Posted Image

Shame about the fag though!!

Posted Image

Finally, a few from Santa Pod.

The inevitable Mk 1s:-

This one V6 powered

Posted Image

and this one, my all time fave. Rover V8 powered. Mus've been a bitch to drive with those front tyres, unles it had power steering fitted!

Posted Image

This one, I think, was owned by a well known DJ.

Posted Image

Scruffy '57 Belair ragtop

Posted Image

Posted Image

'47 Ford

Posted Image

'32 Ford Model B 5-window. Classic street rod!

Posted Image

Think this is the only Jag V12 ever fitted to a dragster. Looks fabulous, but was never competetive.

Posted Image

I loved this little Mini with a straight 6 Jag where the passenger seat should be. Was always hugely entertaining!

Posted Image

as was Tee Rat (Model T Ford with a Chevy rat motor)

Posted Image

Right, well that's it, for now at least. May post more at a later date.

I love that Ford Pop(?)/Ute/Jeep crossover thing!

Posted

Fab pics again!I particularly liked the City Road/Wallsend photos - I had a summer job driving a van around those parts (Pattersons, the Ford dealer on Scotswood Road) and never came across anything like that! It's interesting just how narrow the track was on 60s cars - even with wider Rostyles the arches still look unfilled.Loving the drag pics too. I used to go to Melbourne in the 80s but all my pics are sadly lost :(

Posted

Awesome! You should get some of those old drag/show photos up on Retro Rides

Wolseley 'crab kayak roof rack NOT RAT LOOK etc.

re. the Mini - lace paint is back in you know

Yes, of course. In view of the number of pics/threads on which you're asking this question, why not just put up a general enquiry if you can use pics from here, and ask people to just let you know if they have any copyright issues etc?
