Slightly off topic. here is a link as these, and other,  people post me auction catalogues of properties mainly in the former East where I was looking at one time.    The train people DB and ex-soviet military bases flog some buildings here.

The autobahn is an experience to behold, but lane discipline is a shite sight better than it is over here

Agree about the lane discipline, I wish ours was as good.

I was stationed there twice, for a total of 5 years, In Muenster. Lovely town, a bit like Salisbury. There were only two Battalions based there at that time, so it wasn't overwhelmed with squaddies either.

Some odd laws, I got a ticket for having different sized tyres on my Trans Am (rears were bigger than the fronts, 'natch) but the TuV didn't like that. So once a year I would bring it home for an MoT and stick to my brit plates. Similar issue with a RHD spitfire, due to no mirror on the passenger door.

Berlin before the wall came down was ace, I've still got a border guards fur cap which I swapped for my beret.

Beer was always good, lots or micro brewery's (down south, I think every village has it's own brewery) and strict laws means the beer is lovely and chemical free. Was never keen on the sausage though, and don't even get me started on the vileness that is Gyros.

Chod-wise, whilst stationed there I owned/registered:-

Mk3 Zody RHD/UK

78 Trans Am LHD/UK

Mk4 Spitfire RHD/Ger

E30 320 LHD/Ger

'88 Civic RHD/UK

83 Merc 220 LHD/Ger

Nissan Laurel LHD/Ger

Mk1 Golf LHD/Ger

Couple of Mini's one of each (I may have played mix and match with my number plates to avoid insurance and parking fines before abandoning one of them in Osnabruck airport carpark)

I also had a look at this place on my travels... you can still see where it was repaired. Ein Bonus-Punkt for anyone that can identify it :-)

Edersee Dam? I'd love to visit Hesse again, as I had a lot of fun in the Frankfurt area in late 2003 :)

Jawohl!

I went to see the Möhne dam too, but you can't see the damage on that one. .

Do you mean Münster, or Munster?

They are about 300km apart.

Last time I was out in Germany I was working in Nordhausen.Just up the road was Mittel Dora, the slave labour camp used for the underground V2 rocket factory

Very grim place....

the german one, not the irish one. I don't know where the umlaut is on my laptop and "eu" is an acceptable spelling in German and I seem to recall it also reflects how the germans pronounce it.

No British Army garrison in Munster, to the best of my knowledge :-)

I have no idea where British Army garrisons are in Germany, hence I was just asking.

Münster is indeed quite nice. In Munster, one of which is in Germany and that's the one I'm referring to in a thread about Germany, is a not uninteresting Panzermuseum.

I didn't know that, bugger. I love armour. Good Panzer museum in Dresden too

I go to Berlin a few times a year, what a great city.  There are a fair few older cars around the streets which I never quite understand considering they have their Umwelt Zone.  Never got my head around that.  Drove across a few years ago with a mate in my old Skoda Fabia Greenline, and yeah the autobahn is an experience but not all of it is great.  Long stretches out towards Berlin were the best, with the old 3 pot clocking 117 on the GPS, two up and loaded with luggage and still av.55mpg.  The Soul ain't gonna touch that:-(

I bored the arse off three mates after winning a coin toss and forcing them into the museum. Admittedly as tank mechanics in the Army it was a bit of a busmans holiday, but hey, coin toss

Cars on H-plates (historic) are exempt. Cars not old enough to be on H-plates, but not new enough to be compliant with Umweltzone requirements, are retrofitted with emission control.

Never knew that, ta!

30 years rusting and dry-ageing, then §21 if without TÜV for 'H'

Posted

There aren't many cars left that aren't 30 years old yet and have no emission control, or can't be retrofitted.

Another 4-5 years and the problem won't exist anymore, unless Germany succumbs to the EUSSR 40-year guideline in the meantime.

How does it work if you have an old uk registered car and want to travel in the zone? I fancy a Euro roadtrip later this year (in the scimitar, naturally)

Posted

Only done it with a coach mind but I just ignored the zone completely (being utterly lost helped in that score). Never heard any comeback but I think the EU are changing the rules on member states being able to prosecute cross border soon if not now.

Well that's a clear answer then!

Unless you decide to simply ignore the nonsense (i have never seen any controls on that) you can get the sticker at any TÜV/DEKRA (MOT) station or at dealerships that have the right to do emission tests (most do), costs about 5€. You car being > 30 years, i would claim "historic car excemption status" in the unlikley case you get stopped for not having the sticker.
