wheel adaptors? kitten shreddage?

Hi all.

The odd PCD and lack of cheap tyres to fit my Morris Minor is getting on my tits, adaptors to fit ford or Vauxhall PCD are readily available but are they any good? Google provides mixed reviews with tales of snapped studs, borked bearings, wheel loss and kitten death.

Any opinions before I fork out?

Plenty of Hot rodders putting serious HP through adaptors. Volvo axle fitted with adaptors to accept Jag/Chevy PCD was a popular choice.

Some nuns may raise an eyebrow but that's about it

is it a std MM? bearing may need to have an eye kept on them

Aye, standard MM, although a FWD offset wheel would cancel some of that out

What kind of adaptors?

I like hubcentric adapters if changing the pcd, but they're not usually cheap. Standard adapters I personally don't like but will use if under 10mm thick and the same stud pattern. For small changes of pcd you can use wobble bolts...

Can't you go to 155 80 14 or even 165 70 14 if you fit the 4.5J wheels off a van or traveller?

Van wheels are megabucks so are out of the question. The adaptors I'm looking at have been custom made at great expense and are spigot mounted so everything should be centred nicely when fitted. Some of the other adaptors I've seen don't seem to be mounted this way so I guess may suffer major balance issues.

I ran a set of Porsche teledials on my caddy, via hub-centric 'H&R' 10mm adaptors  and H&R bolts- I just bought the lot, as a 'job lot' as the rims had decent tyres on them -€200 for the lot...

chap I bought them off did all of 2000miles on them on a mk2... problem I had, was the 'inner' /to hub bolts slacking off, n they needed constant re-tightening which meant taking the wheel off each time; time consuming n a 'faff' - on the back one bolt on each side stripped out its threads on the hub... I just flogged the lot off after the tyres got near the limit....

H&R are allegedly a decent brand, but that's my experience of them... another option, is to get the hubs redrilled n tapped to the preferred PCD

I've run loads of adapters, never had a problem. Made and fitted properly they are 100% safe.

Have a set of 100 to 114 on my MR2, they have been fine. Check the total offset otherwise your wheels will stick out a bit.

Morris minor is 4 x 4" pcd, its hardly odd... Its common with: Minis, Small Austins, Reliants, MG's etc etc. Standard moggie wheels are 13" I think? 13" tyres shouldnt be that hard to get hold of I think i can even get part worns in that size locally.

I'd just order the correct tyres online and get your local fitter to fit them. Job done

They'e 14's and really skinny. I just want a wider selection of rims to fit... especially slotmags...

Band your existing steelies then?  and fit some radials. or fit period crossplys for maximum winner points~?

Posted

Those are all options I guess. I don't ever want to use crossplies as they're shite.

I didn't go for the adaptors in the end.. they were cheap enough but there are other areas of the car which needs the money more i.e brakes, paint, fire damage, pretty much everything.

By the time it eventually hits the road I recon a nice set of slotties with the correct PCD will have appeared at a good price.
