Sparticus drives a Buick

Caught this at a gas station in Navasota TX. 12 inches wide according to Sparticus the owner. He's been quite daft sensible about it though as the maximum width is 18", so he said. I said, man you'd need to watch oot for kerbs - you got that right! Bonus points for having the 5th wheel mounted on the trunk. He was clearly tickled pink with that install.

Lots more photos below. We rode a rental bike (2014 Electra Glide in Root Beer Red) from Orlando FL right across the feckin' USA till we hit San Franciso and then finished with 3-days in LA, without being murdered. 4500 odd miles in 13-days without a day off. Tough job, but someone had to do it. :-)

One could only pray that this would be legal over here. Especially in North London, Edmonton to be precise.

Couple more taken at South Lake Tahoe. Didn't expect to see not one but two XR4s.

I can't believe you can buy those things in a land where product liability paranoia rules all (I mean the killer hub spinners, not XR4s).  They can't be a good idea, tempting though they would be at times.

Here's one that makes me smile. Nicest gas station of the trip. Bridgeway Gas, Sausalito CA. Mozart being played over the tannoy helped ease the pain of paying $5 a gallon. Said to the guy, like the music. Yeah Mozart is always good, says him. Where you from? Scotland. Ah Scotland,,, the land of John Knox. Errr, yeah, that's right enough. Not what I expecting him to say at all but that's Californian's for yeh!

Strictly speaking, the spiky, killy deathy hubs belong not to Spartacus (rebellious gladiator dude) but to Messala (evil Roman cheaty chariot racer dude in Ben Hur).  [/pedant]

I was working in Virginia a few months ago. The guy I was working with had a tray for his lap that was moulded around the steering wheel. It was designed to allow to use his laptop while driving.

Not much phases me but the thought of someone get internet-outraged while driving at 60mph did cause a few moments of concern.

Merkur is the brand they were sold under not the model name, the model was xr4ti, for some reason they didn't carry the sierra name over. You could also get a Merkur Scorpio which was a rebranded granada hatchback

Because it's a modified 5 door shell I think. The proper 3 door Sierra came along a year or two later.

Surely the 3 door Sierra base was available on launch, the XR4i was the following year, no?

I agree, 3 door base came first.   Don't know why the XR4i had the extra pillar, maybe it looked good in 1982 to some big haired type in Ford's design department.
