Ill happily return for more hot tinkering action and those lovely cheese and onion sarnies!

And to use your downstairs bog again, its in a great room! Whats behind the little door if you dont mind me asking? You should vacuum off your loo vent too...

Posted

I wasn't going to comment on the loo, but I will now. It was ace. Half loo/half library. Yes, that little door......

Hopefully if return visit indicated the Amazon might put in a show.

I failed to notice the vent.

I bet theres nowt wrong with the carbs (HS's, you can see in the picture on page 1). Once they are set up right they pretty much never go wong unless they ingest a bit of shite or are fiddled with by folk who don't know what theyre doing trying to 'compensate' for some other fault lying elsewhere within the shitty Lucas electrical system. Old SU's are beautifully made and theres almost nothing to go wrong in them!!! They are flippin magic.

How come changing a cap and leads turned into such a palaver then?

It was just 2 pointy HT lead securing screws. The bare ended leads get pushed into the cap on the side of the cap and the screws puncture the HT lead. One screw snapped in half and the other just shredded in situ. We managed to replace 2 new leads only. Am trying to get hold of some spare screws (with limited success).  It buggered us right up.

Plugs were firmly fitted and quite sooty (not oily though).

Agreed, apart from wear in the housing where the spindle sits. This generally causes an air leak at light throttle (where they sit most of the time on a road car) which means the mix is never right, no matter what you do with the jet!

Twins are a bugger to balance though..

Thanks, PB, but, really, I can go out and buy a screw.

Er, that came out a bit funny.

Yes, that did indeed

Hopefully so but I'd have thought RB would have them supplied with the cap but seemingly not. I didn't see anything mentioned on the site either.

They might be one of those odd fiddly to get hold of things, I just don't know. If I get 'em, I'll let you know. No sweat either way :)

I agree with the issue of spindle wear re: carbs. Twin carb balancing is one of those black arts (maybe).

Don't know if your carbs have a fitting for balance guages but if they do then the balance is straight forward. I used the same guages as in this video clip  on A series midgets and twin SU mini,  multi carb motorbikes, B90 Berkeleys etc.

I haz nearly obtained some dizzy cap screws :)

Just to add to the above - I happen to have a colour tune, carb balancer, and timing light which I was given by a friend. I have never used them but would imagine them to be complete/working (in true AS spirit).

I am not a million miles away from the dolly, so let me know if you need them.

Time for a thread on weird/unusual/useful stuff in the "AS community" that might be available for appropriate lendage...?

I haz now obtained several pointy HT screws (or will have by the end of the week).

Hi Putin.... Raoul here.. n still stuck with your cast off mechnical stuff. Have you forgot yer Soviet threads are a different profile to the Capitalist western crap so yer M6 bolt don't fit PBK's M6 nuts.

6mm bolt doesn't fit 6mm nut?

Sounds like one is M6 and t'other be 0BA. Same diameter, same thread pitch but thy just don't like each other.

Kenm, you are lovely, but, please, no need to scour the electrionical internetz for random bits of my old shitheaps!  Mwaaah.

Seriously G it was likely to be much easier and cheaper than other avenues. Trust me on that one, besides consider it part payment for the Corona, cheese and onion butties (and copious amounts of orange juice).

:)

I also enjoy that kind of electronical internetz scouring. I currently have nothing better to do.

Ive lost count of the hoover bits ive given to people to keep old chod vacs going, this sounds the same but for cars!
