"Cars with a list price of over £40,000 when new pay a supplement of £310 per year on top of the standard rate, for five years.

Creating a Roads Fund – From 2020-21 the government will spend all of the revenue raised from VED in England on the English Strategic Road Network."

There are going to be some very cheap large cars a dozen or so years from now.

I wonder who the people networking in the "English Strategic Road Network" are and by which initiation rite I can become a member.

I like the idea of ringfencing, but feel it's simply window dressing. I'd be almost as surprised if suddenly new roads started appearing where needed as if existing roads which are in a poor state were started to be maintained in a reasonable order.

Is it not the case Local Authorities 'patch/relay' existing roads but BIG££ spent by Central Gov to build new ones*..??

*However, it seems, the big house builders will enter a 'deal with the devil', with Local authorities, whereby they [developers] build a cheap bit of 'ring road' so, in return, they get planning for the land they cut-off... and cheap!!

I think central govt is repsonsible for Trunk Routes and some other main roads.

The new tax bands look a lot more sensible with everyhing going down to a sensible rate once it's older.  The current system of big 4x4s on £4-500pa is fine when they are new and owned by the rich but is going to get ridiculous when the current owners of Disco 1's can't find anything else to weld to and upgrade to Disco 3's.

Have I got this wrong or is it only for cars AFTER 2017? So therefore things registered up til then will still be subject to the current system? It's not really as beneficial to those not rich enough to afford brand new cars as the government were trying to make out if that's the case.

Pre-2017 tax bands won't change. So if you just ordered a V8 Mustang it will cost you £1100 a year to tax but wait a little bit and it will be £140 which will have a massive effect on residuals

Similarly, everyone who went out and bought a shitty low capacity diesel with all the emissions gubbins like my old Euro4 Focus and pay £20 a year can't be stung for more, so there's yet another band as well as the pre/post 2001 and pre/post 2006.

I can't wait until 2033 when all these cars with £140 annual tax are affordable.

Looks like we all need to drive 40 year + old chod and let everybody else pay for the roads.

Yup, and as for the 'Spend it all VED on the roads' bullshit  - yeah, right, heard that one before.

To quote Micheal Caine "I might have been born at night, but it wasn't last night"
