I've got one of my dream motors

It was the ally one, and it was the only one NOT wrapped with masking tape. It was new-ish, too, opposed to the "lived-in" other three.

Annoyed, but if this is the biggest set back in X1/9 ownership, it's easy street from here on in, eh?

If your local car paint supplier still use metal tins, the 2.5 litre lids are a perfect fit, and look pretty much factory!

Stripped it down this morning

These gold patches weren't there yesterday!

Took me a moment to notice what was wrong

The stub of the burst flexi came out of the calliper ok, as did the bleed nipple & the sliders. Dropped the calliper out of the way

Pads are also toast

Disc looks ok, doesn't look warped. I'll strip the bearings and check them too, although they feel fine.

Could have been worse, and my revised Christmas list now reads:-

Flexi hose

Calliper seal kit

Rear brake pads

You might a well do both sides.   I've had this before with Italian tackle out on the road after standing, given too much beans before the inevitable caliper snags are addressed.

If it were me, I'd replace the flexy- obviously- as it had probably blocked and caused the brake to stick on. Set of pads and reset the piston. Get rid of the outer seal as they are pants, just lube the piston with brake grease. You'll be giving the calipers a quick check and clean every couple of months anyway hopefully! Wheel bearings are press in and can't be taken apart. If you do change one, best get a new retaining ring beforehand, as you are supposed to use a special tool to get them out. Forget that. BFH and chisel and replace it.

Make sure you have free play on the brake pedal, this can be adjusted using the brake light switch, but if you overcompensate the brakes can start to stick on when they heat up.

Discs are Mk1 Panda/small Uno all round, pads are the same for the front, but rears are Fiat 132/Polonez/X1/9. Plenty on Ebay for next to nowt. I used to just buy them if they were cheap and hold on to them- rears wear much faster than the front and are half the thickness.

i'll order them on Monday, everything I need comes in pairs anyway so while it's all apart I may as well do the whole rear end. Looks like it's onlu going to 30-odd quid and a few hours work, gives me something to do on the 25th... :-)
