Mk2 cavs. Made lots of money on them. Buy them at tuebrook all cammy and smoky,top and tail rebuild circa 100 (inc used camshaft from scrapyard) and out the door with 250 in the holiday fund. Fantastic long distance i thought too,and 30+mpg. Every sierra i owned,and no v6's did 20mpg. Forgetting all the OMGRWD drift shit,i do prefer to be shoved by a car than dragged by fwd

Actually, I've just remembered an automotive job even worse than trying to replace the front pipe on a BL Mini: removing the boot hinges from a Cavalier Mk2 saloon. I foolishly let people know I was braking one and got a few requests to remove said hinges, the aftermath of which was both rear wings very badly sliced and my hands shredded to ribbons.

In my ownership over the years were my prized SRi 1.8 saloon (D178 OTX), the Callbre, a lovely sort of burnt orange early saloon with matching seats, an SRi 130 that was absolutely shagged, a couple of earlier 1.8 SRis and and a 1.3L facelift saloon, and probably some others.

 

PD, was it you that had a Commander? I remember one of the gang calling round in one that had amazingly survived reasonably well, with just a few weird electrical gremlins. I still laugh whenever I think of that model and how they were all stored (in a field) which caused massive problems. Everyone who had one must still have nightmares about the rust and the electrics, I absolutely love to find one still on the road.

Commander was actually a nice spec, shame they rotted, Club was horrid, but a blue Antibes...mmmm

I was busted by the cops at Loch Lomond in a gold 1.8 CDi hatch, met my wife with a Silver 1.8 SRi and made a kid in a brown 1.6L.. which also snapped a timing belt with no damage. It was a 1 owner old giffer minter, but at 19 was not cool.  I suppose I had the Autoshite gene back then,

I always liked them, nice looking cars and I think they've aged well! On the rare occasion you see one they really stand out. I saw a late saloon in Portsmouth the other day, a red LXi, never seen it before and followed it for a while. I need to start taking my camera to work!

A mates dad had a lovely 2.0 CDi hatch in metallic gold with a gorgeous brown interior, lovely car but rotted to buggery in the end. It was fast as fook too!

And I used to work on an early, X or Y reg 1300 saloon. It was immaculate inside and out in that flat blue colour that seemed popular on these. It was a giffer owned one. When I worked on it, must have been around 2002/3 sort of time it had only done 30k odd miles. It really was mint. He'd never sell me it though!

I did my work experience at the long defunct rover dealer in Widnes.

 

All the mechanics drove round in utterly shite cars - knackered mk 2 granny's, sunbeams, datsun 100's.

 

One of the mechanics had just bought a three year old cavalier commander on a c plate.

 

He could'nt afford his dinner - the others had shit cars but could eat.

I worked (indirectly) for a Rover and Nissan garage in Widnes, they had garages in Widnes, St Helens and Warrington iirc, their head office was Barnsley.

Yeah, I blew the engine of mine up on the Runcorn bridge. The conrod came out and destroyed the starter motor.

As you know I was a member of  www.mk2cav.com for a time, but I became somewhat addicted, and my obsession developed into a mild mental illness.

 

I have owned a 1.6 GL facelift, a preface lift 1.8 Cdi Auto, a preface lift 1.8 Sri, and the Calibr

 

The 1.8's had the 1.8e astra GTE mk1 8V engine with 115BHP and that SRi had a so called "ultra close ratio gearbox" which meant it was almost redlining in 5th at 115.

 

The regrets over selling all of them outweighs all the other automotive regrets in my life. BUT I'm not going back.

My dad had a mk3 cav 130 that did exactly the same thing with a con rod out the side of the block. There was a problem with the 2.0 8 valve with rods snapping. They break just under the little end bearing and the resulting mess wreaks the lot. The thing was still running when I pulled on to the hard shoulder but due to it taking out the starter it wouldn't start again.
