Rapidly going aff it tbh. the whole fleet (save the CLIO!) are borked.

That is a might achievement with the list of cars you were telling me of at the weekend. I am Very impressed!

I'd sell the Citroen if I was you, to a devillishly handsome folicaly challenged bloke from Fife. And then I'd buy his Merc for reliable* transport.

straight swap amd you're on!

I spent an enjoyable 90 mins swapping the filter and trying to get the fucker to bleed through.

Application of a full filter didnt work, neither did towing it behind a discovery.

taking off the feed line from filter to pump and pouring in fresh veg (decadance!) then multo bueno starter churn plus td5 battery charger got it to fire and die.

MOAR CRANKING eventually lead to it starting and running ok.

did 7 miles in it and seems ok. Tomorrow morning will be the acid test..

Glad you got it going. Priming the fuel filter on the starter is fruitless as you found out.

Do you know why it was running poorly?

Seems to have been drawing in air as fuel filter valve was not a right fit in el cheapo filter

It made work ok this morning, no poor running to report.

save being dog slow when running the stock map!

I may give it a week of stock mapps before back to BANZAIIIIII!

Posted

Well that is at least a start.

The stock map did feel unbelievably slow in comparison to any other map except in 3rd gear obviously  ;-)

This is still not right. I'm hoping it can make it to the weekend - then it will need some more investigationing

If only there was something for sale locally, maybe with the correct number of cylinders...

The harder the veg is to pull up the line from the tank (restrictions, general cold and gloopiness), the more chance there is of an air leak. Make it easy for the oil to flow from the tank to the under-bonnet filter and the chances of air ingress reduces exponentially. Try sucking diesel up a metre of fuel line then do the same with veg - at 4C. I'm amazed the pumps manage it, especially with the gloopy Soya stuff.

i'm starting to think its the in tank strainer thats making it struggle too. will need to try getting it off at the weekend

I managed to get bothered enough to have a look at this bugger today.

Managed to get the sender unit/feed from the tank strpped out and cleaned up.

I put it back together and had no bubbles in the line.

Will try a 50/50 mix tank to see if it is ok

I am slowly getting to that conclusion..

as such I cba with a pita..

I used to have a Pajero and they are known for rotting out the fuel lines underneath causing air etc.

Approved repair* is to get a massive length of rubber hose in the right size and replace, cable-tying to the existing pipes under the car.

Possibly worth a go as fault-finding / sanity check if nothing else?

Pipe on tank - go through car, out window, onto filter head, see how it drives.

But did you put a few bigger holes in the pickup's fine strainer mesh, and remove the hugely restrictive check valve in the supply connection (small spring and other gubbins in the path of the fuel)? Use of 5mm drill bit needed.

Known to cause probs even running on diesel in colder countries, VW modified the part on later cars to prevent the problem.

Although fella on the vid doesn't drill out the problem (just replaces the entire unit with a new revised one), he separates the parts of the assembly, which is necessary to clear out swarf etc. About 6mins in. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRMTEAKsScE

No I didnt- as detailed above several times it was removed and cleaned.

I didnt have the means to pynch it out/widen filter mesh so just cleaned it out.

it wasnt even that dirty, and the chamber was full when I pulled it out.

As is, it has about 2 weeks mot left, and I've lost 3 days fucking about with it.

I'm not pulling it out again. I may try the fresh pipe from pickup to filter if I can get some easily

Do you not know any truck mechanics or haulage yards,

I have stripped a few trailers now and kept the plastic airline's which run the full length, I deal for fuel lines if you use the thicker ones.

Alarmingly not unfortunately.

Wonder what I could use? outlet on the sender is pretty small bore

Posted

Bet my bottom dollar it's that huge restriction in the supply tube in the sender unit as pictured, along with the fine strainer mesh. Well-documented on TDi forums, VW changed the design to prevent exactly the probs you're experiencing.

Half an hour's work to prevent all the ballache you've had would be well worth it, shirley?

It may well be:)

but where can it draw the air from?

assuming filter valve is sealed, and the level sender/tank out is full of fuel.

unless I've snagged a fuel line

Posted

I was wondering if its not air as such but frothing up the oil making it look that way.

The sort of vacuums diesel fuel pumps can generate have been known to collapse metal fuel tanks. So the crap thermo-valve sat on top of the VW filter is childs-play. A strong enough vacuum will break the seal on the best joint, proper fuse hose clip (as opposed to jubilee clip) notwithstanding. The other weak point on more modern VWs would be those snap on connectors sealed by an O-ring.

I learnt long ago to prep a car for running on veg through colder months, rather than spend weeks trying to find a problem then give up and empty my wallet on a forecourt.
