The Insurance Games

Hey fellow shiters, it's been a while since I've played this game - so I was wondering what the favoured approach is these days?

I've been after a leather interior for my prized P.O.S (an Avensis) for ages.  They literally never come up.  Years of relentless wear and tear from my arse has rendered the current chair very uncomfortable and quite weathered, so it's time for an upgrade.

Let's cut to the chase.

There's an entire car for sale at the moment with a full leather interior and a few other bits that would keep my shed in the slow lane for at least another 5 years.

SO the plan is BUY it.  SWAP the bits I want with the ones I don't.  Flog/Scrap the car I've just bought leaving me with a fully refurbished asian taxi.

SO: who's offering friendly insurance terms at the moment with minimal/no administration charges etc?  A couple of weeks would probably just be about enough to get everything done.

Any help appreciated.

Two weeks? Which is around the same as the 14 day cooling off period?

Just saying.

Are you planning on keeping the 'new to you' car on the road while you swap the bits? If not, just don't bother insuring it - or do you need to recover it home after buying it?

Can the current owner deliver it for a small fee? Otherwise insure it for a day on one of those short term insurers sites and bring it back. I suspect you'll get change from £30 for a day on something like that.

I need to move it from Derbyshire to Cambridgeshire.  No trailer - plus the new acquisition has MOT and is perfectly drivable.  Need to enquire about 'get you home tax' but I can get it off road back at home.

Only prob with the 14 day cooling off is that it still lands an admin charge, amirite?

One thing I definitely wouldn't do is drive it home on the legal car's plates, especially if it was the same colour.

HA!  Hadn't thought of that!!  LOL.

Sadly, the blue and purple aren't exactly "mistakable".  I guess it'd satisfy ANPR, but not human beings.

For what the tax and insurance would cost,a wrecker could prob be hired

I don't think they can charge admin for cooling off. Distrance selling regs, you shouldn't be out of pocket at all if you change your mind (unless you claim, natch)

It's probably not ethical, but may I remind you - insurance companies. They hate you already. One thing it isn't is fraudulent.

we had similar needs when we bought the Outback but needed to keep the Outlander on the road for about a month until 'er indoors's mate bought it off us.

so, we checked up on short term insurance, fuck me a serious rip off, so SWMBO phoned SAGA who she's insured with.

couldn't have been more helpful, we'll open up a new policy and after a month you can cancel and get nearly all of it back, i'm dubious about this but the bloke assured her it was kosher.

so that's what happened, car duly sold policy cancelled, refunded promptly and it ended up costing us about £40 for the month all in, well happy.

SAGA also offered such a decent renewal price this years  that we didn't bother looking elsewhere for her car.

Whether your insurer will be so accommodating, you can but ask.

Does your existing insurance allow you to drive something else third party? Or do one of your friends have a similar type policy that would allow them to drive it home with your permission?

I would imagine the admin would be minimal and the cost limited to whatever favour your mate called in as a return.....

Car has to be otherwise insured for that, so back to square one.
