London Shiters: insider info please?

Later in the year I'm going to be flying from Heathrow, which means driving down the day before (which is a Saturday) and staying overnight.  I've booked a Travelodge, in Cricklewood, and plan to visit the RAF Museum at Hendon on the way to the airport on the Sunday.  Am I going to be affected by the Congestion Charging and if so, what will I need to do?  I'll be in the Tacuma, 2.0 petrol, taxed as Disabled.

Not if you're only heading as far in as Cricklewood - Drive straight in (it's a doddle to find from Staples corner)

Congestion zone starts way further down Edgeware road (Baker street tube, even), and is only in force Mon - Fri, anyway.

Just be aware that Cricklewood can be quite 'lively' at times - I used to live in Kilburn, and that was quite 'lively' too...

If you're planning to leave a car at the airport for a week or two it might be cheaper to book an airport hotel and parking package.

I've stayed at one of the airport Holiday Inns before for £110 a night, which isn't cheap, but it included 2 weeks parking. This worked out cheaper than a nights hotel plus 14 days parking at the airport..

Or just leave your motor on a street in Cricklewood for free and go to Heathrow on the train. Should be fairly straightforward from there.

Fine suggestions there chaps, but travelling with a wheelchair means there are certain ways we need to do stuff.  Also, I doubt we will ever again be so close to the RAF Museum, so we're going to take advantage of that!

If you're travelling from Cricklewood to Heathrow, either by going south from Crickelwood, then west to Heathrow, or north from Cricklewood, then along the North Circular Road then west on the M4 to the airport you will NOT enter the Congestion Charge, so no worries. The charge only applies from 7am to 6:30pm Monday to Friday and most journeys to & from Heathrow involve indecently early morning or late evening starts or ends anyway!

When are you travelling?

Thank you Andrew.  All the driving will happen on Saturdays and Sundays so it looks like it's all good!  It's not till the autumn so I suppose there's time for the Zone to be expanded, but I was getting a bit worried just because I didn't know how it worked already.  I'm not worrying now.  Thanks!

Hendon's a good museum, and indeed it's nowhere near the Congestion Charge zone, but it is in the LEZ.

You could even go for a bite at the Ace Café down the North Circular on the way to the airport via the North Circular and the M4.

You should be fine with the LEZ but if you want to check to be sure this is the link.

Cricklelwood, once home of Bentley, Smiths clocks, Thrupp and Maberly ,laterly Rootes (on what is now Humber Road) etc.

To get to the RAF museum from there, either go along Cricklewood Lane to the A41 and follow this up through HEndon until you get to Aerodrome Road...  Or go straight up the Edgware Road through West Hendon and turn right down Colindale Av.  Roads should be pretty quiet on a Sunday morning.

The fat robin hood with the messy blond mop of hair & the oxfam suit can afford to take weekends off after a hard week of fleecing london's drivers. :)

Oh, just remembered and thought I'd mention in case you've missed it and it surprises you but they charge a few quid at the RAF museum for the car park, including blue badge holders.  But since museum entrance is free it's not really a hardship considering the quality of the displays.
