Scrap Prices?

Anyone know what the scrap price is like at the moment? I'm really struggling to find some sensors and other bits i need for my probe but theres a complete good running one with no test for sale for 150 locally..Tempted to buy, take what i need and weigh it in, but wondered what i'd get back at the weighbridge.Also... legally does a car need to have tax/test to be towed?

Legally if a cars wheels are on the road then it should have tax and test....Not certain on scrap price but its stll fairly low as far as I know.

We took a load of stuff to McDonald's just before the holidays and the price was £70/tonne then.Legally a car should have all its paperwork in order if it's got a wheel on the road.

Why doesn't our local McDonalds take in scrap cars? :? Could get a double quarter pounder with cheese and get rid of my tat at the same time.

hmm. I'll pay the bloke a visit and see if 100 is enough to persuade him to sell if it has what i need. Getting it down the road could be a problem tho with no T&T. It'd be just my luck to get a tug, although no MOT is usually only a 60 quid fixed penalty!

The main thing is to make sure you're insured and make sure all the lights and tyres are good. How far away is it?

Scrap cars were down to about £15 a tonne here not long ago. I'd definately check around your local places before you commit to buying it.

When i sold my Vauxhall Disastra a few months back i was selling it without tax. Chap was asking how you could drive it away without tax. I just said, 'it did not matter, whats the chances of you getting pulled on a short journey, i do it all the time, that car there is not even taxed now' and so on.He did not buy the car then but came back a few days later in his police uniform. Be careful who you talk to......Anyway kids....Insurance is there in case you crash and kill/maim some poor sod. My understanding is that you drive untaxed (unless its an MOT drive) you are uninsured. You run the risk. I have done it several times and got away with it, but if you fuck someone up its on your head. As always if you cant do the time dont do the crime.Todays letter is the letter I.

Did a couple before Christmas and got £65 and £60 a tonne at Slough. Got a 306 Diesel to do tomorrow if I can get it sorted in time and a well rusty Mark 1 Sierra Estate later in the week. Cars either at the moment are either free collection or £150

Manchester area it was £ 90 a ton on thursday, cats are down to £10 , :):)

Purchased. haggled down to £100. It was just along the road from my work in dundee so have put it there since its off road until tomorrow when i can decide the best plan for getting it home.

Its actually a saveable beast.. idles very high when cold but settles to normal, dire need of a polish, needs new brake pads which the bloke gave me to go with it and an exhaust as the system is rustier than the titanic, apart from that I reckon it would go through a test.

Tempted to do so and give it to the missus. Or do i just rob and weigh in? I dont like scrapping something half decent. its a nice quiet smooth drive.

Spent all of its days until july last year in cornwall so its not even rusty.

Basically I need the air pan and MAF plus the air temp sensor and Co2 sensor. I can replace them on this car with a high flow system i have that wont fit mine because it fouls on the LPG kit. And the C02 sensor matters not a jot unless its test time.

Dave, Pauls still got my A frame in the 'beath, borrow it and you can move the Probe and bring me your Capri down.....might even let you have your FoMoCo prezzie then

That actually could be a plan. Will a Probe go on an A-frame tho? you got time to sort the capri?I'm reluctant to drive it when the paint is even more faded than Michael Barrymore's career.. its asking for a tug.

Looks quite good to scrap... I'd rob the bits for yours and take another look, maybe spend half a day with a polishing mop to win yourself over. If the kit you have for yours that won't fit will fit on this, it seems a bit of a steal for £100.Look at it this way, polish it up and do the bits and bobs for MoT. With a years ticket you'll at least double your price on t'bay even if it still runs funny.

surely if you weigh in the probe, youre no worse than a banger boy or is this different?

It'll A frame..............as for time, got way too much of it at the moment :)

This is different. Hope that clears things up for you wrecker!

Hmmm. Hmmmm?Banger racer buys a running but shoddy car. Banger racer strips the goodies off and sells them on, and they keep other models on the road. Banger racer than destroys whats left of car, after applying some Dulux and a 'humerous' tagline.Apart from the scrapping instead of racing to destruction, it's not THAT much different. If a car is too far gone to save without spending £££, but can harvest some useful stuff, then raid it. I let a frilly GTE go for this, the cabrio hood/engine/electronics/interior went to a vandalised one and the shell was squished.Obviously I'm distancing this from the minority of racers who obtain cars by less-than-legal methods. They should have their balls welded to a towhitch and taken for a drive.

The environmental impact of those last few laps of the track is probably pretty high with noise pollution, unburnt petrol emissions, fuel/oil leakages and then there's the NHS cost of taking competitors to hospital with jiggered spines.

This is different. I have no issue with the banger racing of 10 - 15 year old shitters that are heading for scrap anyway.my problem is the "lets find the rarest, oldest car and smash it up" type events, where cars that arent exactly plentiful anymore are wasted. With this one i think I'll give it a good look over to see if it looks like theres much else that would need doing for a test, if not I'll run a polish over it, bung an exhaust box and a set of pads in it and stick it on ebay with a full ticket. If it needs too much spending though i'll try and punt it through the forums then weigh in if no joy.

Scrap still £65 a tonne in Colnbrook this morning

Posted

If your down colnbrook you ought to nip into the railway sidings (is that yard still there?) and dredge the side of the track, its antique shite, crossplies, A60 rims, I spotted a Ford type 3 box last time I was there

Probe looks OK with a good polish - I could never scrap a car that runs well and has no rust issues, feels like such a waste! What do you reckon to the Cougar CortinaDave? - these seem to be getting quite cheap now.

How about the garage that was at the end of the bypass that is being turned into flats. There were some proper old motors rotting out the back including some old army trucks (WWII 15cwt (ish). I expect most of it got binned probably past saving but interesting all the same.

Got it home without getting my collar felt so I'll have a proper look at it today and hit it with some G3 if the weather's not too stinking.I've had a couple of people express an interest in it as is already so if i can rob what i want then punt it on and be £50 up thats what i'll do. 8)

Any chance of shoving a quick pick up here of the rusty Sierra before it gets cubed, sounds great!

Funny you should say that scrapped it today but took some photos, which I don't normally do. I will stick them on at the weekend.
