MSA petrol prices, taking the piss?

Stracathro services are unbelievable. I have used them a couple of times when in dire jeopardy of running out and winced at the £1.52 / litre price.

Thing is, folk must be paying it or they'd have been out of business long ago.

I can't help but think they shoot themselves in the foot as the A90 is a busy road and a reasonable pump price would see them get a lot of custom rather than raping half a dozen motorists a day.

Most of their business is on the kind of fuel cards that charge the same wherever you fill up, regardless of pump price. I don't think they are that bothered about private motorists.

Think Justin might have beaten me to the punch here with his justoffjunction reference but there also used (still?) to be a website called 'Five Minutes Away'? or something like that which pointed to amenities just off the motorway junctions such as petrol stations, food outlets etc. that were as the title suggested, 5 mins away.

Also I think it was the FTA produced a similar little booklet which was just aimed at the junctions off the M25. (This was in the 90's so will be little use now) I know this as I found a photocopy in some paperwork  a couple of months back.

Personally rather shit on the verge and wipe my arse with a leaf than go in one.

Have not used an MSA for years. They are just like airports, full of mongs and overpriced landfill. Just about every route we travel on we have found places to eat where you don't wish you were dead within 45 seconds. I think the worst thing about them now is their attempts at not being MSAs - I would much rather go back to formica and fibreglass lampshades than all this "experience" bullshit.

I had a lovely piss at Exeter services yesterday, first class. Didn't spend any money though.

I never set foot across take-over-the-world-Tosco's threshold, but don't they have some form of points or summat that gives a discount on fuel for buying your groceries/phone/banking/insurance/eyesight/grandmother/whatever the fuck else they flog?

Maybe it works out the same prices as across the road once you've sold a kidney?

They do have the fuel save points thing. We have had a new tesco open near us a year or so ago and we shopped there till recently. Our weekly shop helped us to knock 20p a litre of the so called diesel they sold. My Frontera ran on it ok but that runs on anything but my VW hates it.

Unless you are about to soil yourself I can't see the point in them. Supermarkets are everywhere these days so you can usually find one with cheap pez and stodge a minute or so off the motorway.

Long trip? Fill the tank to the brim before leaving. That way you don't have to stop at all apart from availing oneself of the shitter.

Mind you, I met Roy Chubby Brown at a services on the M1 Oop North 2-3 years ago. I was travelling to the Highlands with two birds (Mrs and Fit friend) so of course they can only manage an hour at a time before needing a piss/chocolate etc. Roy was in the queue so I said hello, shook his hand and had a quick chat. Nice bloke.

Motorways?

Avoid like the clap.

This as well. Sometimes that just cannot be avoided, but the M1 in particular is just awful now. Never ending 50mph roadworks for miles and miles and miles.

Set off two or three hours early, let every other twat shoot by, Radio 4 and just do your best to cope with it. These days, A and B roads aren't much better with scores of cluless NSL wankers.

I know. But for me it's one of the luxuries most worth striving for in life: Buy some real vintage shite, like a Ford T, and never again use a motorway,

or eat in a franchise operation. Shit behind hedge as applicable.

I think that the rents are genuinely astronomical - but they're charging as much as the market will bear and clearly the punters are rolling in.

Oddly, lpg doesn't seem to have a premium.  Perhaps because the lpg users like me wouldn't pay one?
