DodgyBastard Posted April 15, 2021 Author Posted April 15, 2021 Just one left to do, I feel like I'm getting better at making repair panels. I learnt more last year from my self taught Hungarian friend than I have at my job as a welder in a dockyard. Minimad5, BlankFrank, Andyrew and 8 others 11

DodgyBastard Posted April 16, 2021 Author Posted April 16, 2021 I took my aprilia up around an opencast mine yesterday for a quick off road adventure, with the gearing setup and road tyres it was pretty poor. A few hours later after buying the mz and parking it next to the aprilia I noticed the aprilia was missing it's side panel plastic. I made a search of it on foot at 10pm in the dark wandering around the quarry with just the torch on my phone, after searching for an hour we gave up. We went back out today and retraced my route on the roads then I took a little pink bike around the quarry in daylight and found the plastic panel at the top of one of the hills I'd struggled getting to the top of on the aprilia. DodgyBastard Posted April 20, 2021 Author Posted April 20, 2021  I got the welding finished on the Mercedes and stuck it in for an mot this morning, it passed with a couple of advisories. It'll require a pair of tyres, a pair of rear springs and a rocker cover gasket in the near future.  I'm going to bung it on Car and classic for an inflated price but if anyone fancy it for a shiters price of £3000 then get in touch. adw1977, puddlethumper, wesacosa and 8 others 11
Zelandeth Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 Want...yes. Have space for, sadly not. I really, really need to try one of those Mercs one day. Reckon it would make an ideal daily classic for me. Looks pretty much spot on for what I'd be after, even down to being one of the preferred colours for the model in my mind. LightBulbFun 1

DodgyBastard Posted April 26, 2021 Author Posted April 26, 2021 I've been after a van for a while but much like off road bikes at the moment, everything for sale seems to have covid inflation and people are asking way too much for them. Trying to find a van for £1k or less was proving quite difficult and anything that did appear for sale sold instantly. I saw the LDV a couple of months back on marketplace with a price of £1234, I enquired about it and the owner wanted offers, I made an offer of £450 as it was out of mot and I needed to factor in transporting it. The seller replied he needed £700 for it and all the welding it failed on on its last test had been done so I agreed to pay £700 and arranged transport, after that the seller stopped responding for a while until he replied that he was going to mot it and sell it for more which was fair enough. A month after that it appeared for sale again from some relation of his, she said she needed £1k for it as they had spent £700 on welding etc and it was ready for an mot, I said I couldn't get down there until the end of the week and by that point it was sold to someone else. The person that bought it had to redo most of the welding but did manage to get it through an mot. He advertised it on Gumtree for £1200 which I was prepared to pay for a van with a fresh ticket. I made arrangements to collect it at the end of the week and turned up to see it on time, I had a look at it, he showed me the bits he'd had to do etc, we wended up chatting for a while, he was impressed with the Subaru MV Pickup I'd arrived in and we talked about that, cars and bikes etc. I was prepared to just pay the asking price and leave but he basically said he was open to offers on it so I offered £1k which he was happy with, I think because we had got along and I was easy to deal with as a buyer he was happier to haggle. I transferred the money and jumped in it and drove it back up the road, it drives absolutely fine but the speedometer is out of action, looking at the mot history the mileage hasn't changed since 2018, I really should have paid more attention. I wanted a van for chucking motorbikes in, I'm hoping in the summer we can chuck the bikes in and drive out to the highlands and explore them by 2 stroke 125's while leaving the van as a base camp somewhere. That's the idea anyway... phil_lihp, Tickman, nacho man and 15 others 18
DodgyBastard Posted April 26, 2021 Author Posted April 26, 2021  Having taken this out for a long run over the weekend and after answering hundreds of questions from potential buyers I've decided to remove it from sale and keep it, I simply can't be arsed dealing with the types of people who are potentially interested in a car like this. I bought a set of tyres which I'm planning on fitting to the Bundt "mexican hat" alloys I have for this. I have no real need to sell anything else at the moment apart from being slightly overwhelmed with the amount of cars I have, I just have to try not to buy anything else. I just hate having roadworthy/taxed stuff that's sitting unused for long periods of time so perhaps I'll keep the Mercedes in a summer rotation and park it up each winter. rob88h Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 S123 prices are only going one way, not that you’d necessarily be after the money, but if you ever want to scratch that itch again it’s harder and harder to find one you can stomach paying for. I miss my 300TD big time - the rose tinted glasses even take the memory away of how haggard it truly was. If you have the space, I say keep it! DodgyBastard 1

DodgyBastard Posted May 17, 2021 Author Posted May 17, 2021   I've been driving this for around 6 months now and getting bored of it lately so would like to swap it for something else, I had a scan of gumtree for suitable swaps and found a Chevrolet Lacetti estate for sale. The owner seemed incredibly keen to swap so yesterday I cleaned the Mini for the first time in six months getting it into a presentable condition and drove it to Forfar to have a look at the Lacetti.   I took it out for a short test drive, the autobox seemed incredibly rubbish, it would rev really high then awkwardly clunk into the next gear. It was making all kinds of noises from the brakes and the abs and traction control lights were illuminated. The seller tried to tell me that the car had a large fuel tank and his sister had put £10 in and driven it down from Arbroath, the gauge was on empty... It was quite awful to drive, I spent most of the test drive stuck in roadworks but on the brief occasions I got to drive it, it was a grim experience. When I got back I got straight to the point, the car wasn't for me so I just fucked off back home in the Mini. I've now stuck it on Marketplace and gumtree in the small hope that I can swap for something different... Coprolalia, sdkrc, Isopon and 3 others 6

Something definitely amiss with that Lacetti, I drove my Grandads Automatic  Lacetti once and although not really my cup of tea, it actually drove quite nice.Â
DodgyBastard Posted May 19, 2021 Author Posted May 19, 2021 I've been looking on all the usual places for something old or interesting and not much has stood out. I went to see a 2002 Suzuki swift at the start of the week but didn't buy it mainly because the bonnet catch was broken and it was being held shut with a cable tie. I spotted this Carina today which has been passed around between a couple of friends, one of them first had it in 2017 so went along and bought it. I do have the original alloys for it which I bought when the previous owner fitted these aftermarket things so will be refitting them when I get some new tyres. It drives a lot better than it did in 2017 although the bodywork is a little crustier. Â I have someone up in Peterhead interested in the mini so hoping to drop it off and return in the scaab 9000 if I can organise something. Â dome, Tickman, crad and 17 others 20
DodgyBastard Posted May 21, 2021 Author Posted May 21, 2021 Â I managed to arrange collection for the Scaab today, the guy buying my Mini met me in Aberdeen not far from Supernaut's house which made things a bit easier. It pissed down the majority of the day and some trim fell off of the mini on the way up to Aberdeen so spent the majority of the journey with wind noise coming from the A-pillar. The Saab performed faultlessly apart from the slight clutch judder. Â Â Isopon, Supernaut, Tickman and 14 others 17
DodgyBastard Posted May 22, 2021 Author Posted May 22, 2021 Mot prep done on the mz, I bought some chunky tyres, a horn and a set of rubber grips for the handle bars, foot pegs, gear lever and kickstart lever. DodgyBastard Posted June 2, 2021 Author Posted June 2, 2021 I was sick of looking at the floor plate covered in pigeon shit welding on the ldv so set about removing it and trying to do a tidier job as half of it wasn't even really welded. I cut out the plate and made up a paper template which I then traced onto steel, cut that out and made sure it fit nicely, I drilled out some holes which ran along the chassis so I could plug weld it too. I plugged in the welder and discovered some prick had used all of the gas welding his Mercedes so I had to make do with pure argon which was pretty horrible to weld with. It's definitely better than it was and I hid all of my own pigeon shit welding with seam sealer. The Moog, loserone, danthecapriman and 15 others 18

DodgyBastard Posted June 7, 2021 Author Posted June 7, 2021 I sold this to my cousin last year or the year before to use as her first car. She has now got a company car so no longer needs it and said I can have it back. It's a 1.6 auto with mot until September, given my unsuccessful attempts at getting rid of the Carina I probably shouldn't buy it, I can't imagine there will be much demand for it.
