P6 - Content - Down at the disco jumper to jumper, wait a minute where's me bumpers? Cable Guy

I have no idea what his plan was. I wish he'd kept all the bumper brackets and bolts though as it's really cocked me up. My new bumper came with the light (with sheared bolts obviously) but I seem to have put it down somewhere and now can't find it!

Check out this place I found in Cheadle Hulme yesterday.

Enough clues in the photos for me to find it on G**gle M*ps.

In May 2009, a white one with a black vinyl roof was parked out front. Looked just like mine!

I'm sure he'll get around to it one day. At least, once the drug stockpile in the front room has been shifted on.

Edit: The address is the registered address of a ~~~~~~~ business - I shudder to think of the workmanship I could expect...

Wow how did you stumble over that? I bet he's got loads of spare bumper bolts!

When I hung out with the sd1 massive they told there was a guy who broke sd1s and other old rovers from his suburban semi detached house. He made so much £ he bought his neighbours house and used that as his parts store . They said you couldn't tell from the outside so it's obviously not this guy.

Big thanks to major bell end who made sure my nuts where the right size. Hold on that didn't come out right.

Anyway getting these bumpers on was a right pa-lava as I got the bumpers, then found I didn't have mounts, so bought mounts then found out I didn't have the right nuts and bolts to connect the mounts to the car. I got all that then while knocking a dent out the slightly ropey rear bumper a big fucking hole appeared in the bumper of the ideal size to slice off nosey toddlers fingers. I just stuck a big bolt and washer through the hole but I recon I'm going to get a Uraguay flag or something to bolt to it.

For some reason I don't have a picture of the bumper on the car but I do have a picture of the bumper.

The car is a right pisser to start as there's no choke cable. It had been mentioned a mini one would fit so bought one off ebay for 13 quid and went about fitting it tonight. Getting the old mount off was a right pain in the arse as there's no access at the point it's bolted onto the back of the console.

So fuck that, I got my POWAFILE and ground it off. Fuck me the metal was about an inch thick. I won the battle in the end.

I fitted the new cable and it's about 7 metres too long. Not sure how this is for a mini unless the cable is looped through the boot then back to the engine bay. Knowing BL products this isn't impossible right enough. With a bit of cannobilisation from the old cable I got it fitted with the use of only 1 cable tie and 1 bit of gaffa tape. A new record for me.

This means I can re-assemble the ICE.

It's working as it should but I'm not noticing a lot of difference. Also the the length of cable is causing the it to pull the knob back through. I'm not keen on cutting the cable as I've no way of crimping a new end onto it. The big test will be start it from cold as it took me 10 minutes this evening to get it started and running well enough to reverse it out the garage. There maybe something else a miss.

Also this keeps happening.

I've seen that P6 hoarder's place loads of times, it's at the end of a road that faces onto the railway from Manchester to London (that's behind the fence). You can see it from a passing train. Never had a reason to go snoop, but it'd be pretty easy to find. The cars are always out in the open and have been there a couple of years at least.

That place is a mere three minutes from my house.

The next one who "finds" this place and doesn't show up at my place for a cuppa/beer/Martini is considered having something against me.

I found it on G****e Earth, so apologies for not having an e-cuppa with you.

But if that's your place, then I can see why you chose your username.

Ooh matron!

Assuming that's sump oil, and by inference from you saying it "keeps happening" (i.e. after engine has been running but not otherwise I suppose), then I'm worried that your rear main (rope) seal is on the way out.

In that case, you have an urgent task to perform:

Blow out your flame traps!

If you don't know what I mean by that, am happy to explain.

It's gearbox oil as when i reversed the car out the garage there was a big pool of cherry fluid sitting in the ground. Hopefully it's just a sump gasket or something .

At least it doesn't shit on the carpet

Be sure your words will find you out.

I've got a layer of oil and grease about an inch thick on my drive from all the old shite heaps pissing oil out over the years. I can only count a handfull of them that have managed to keep all their fluids in.

Posted

I nipped up all the bolts on the inlet manifold and put a hose clip on a vaccum hose. Didn't make much difference to the awkward starting.

I did get a picture of the ropey bumper in situ.

Do the pictures of flatter it or is the paint really as nice as it looks?

Posted

The paint's actually pretty good. So good infact they thought they'd also apply it to most of the window rubbers.

My mate who's a painter got a look at it last night and he's pretty sure it's a shade or two light, which is going to be fun when I come to  paint the wings and door bottoms. I might just have to run a 12 inch under seal tide line.

Posted

That was mentioned in the original advert, wasn't it? "lighter than Almond".

Posted

Yes that's right it was on the advert but I can't really tell the difference. I bet if I painted the door bottoms and wings in that colour I could though.

I recon the plan will be to fix the wings and door bottoms then do two sides. I did this with my SD1 and it worked out okay.

I'm off on holiday just now so I thought I'd take it out for a spin. It started and settled down much, much easier with half a dozen pumps of the accelerator then me holding the choke cable out.

When warm and I'm in drive with my foot on the brake it holds around 1000 rpm

20282903622_dcb10e2027_b.jpgOldcarcrap by cort16, on Flickr

When I stick it in neutral it goes up to 1750 - 2000 rpm with the choke fully in. This means it thumps when it goes into drive or reverse but otherwise drives fine. I'd like to get it down a bit but am loathe to start fucking around with the carbs. Anyone any other ideas on what could be causing it remembering that I've just refitted the inlet manifold quite possibly incorrectly?

Carbs need setting up properly. they need to be in synch and the mixture must be right.

Otherwise the OMGRPM difference between being in or out of gear is too big. Also 1000 RPM in gear is way too high.

Interesting. Although the manifold came off the carbs stayed on the manifold nothing was changed. Saying that I have no idea what it ran like before.

^^This^^, but first make sure:

1) the choke really is fully off,

and also adjust the throttle linkages so that:

2) the throttle really does reach its minimum setting on both banks,

3) the linkages move each bank together with no backlash,

and (4) make sure the pistons are moving smoothly inside the dashposts without sticking.

(I don't fiddle with carby settings until I'm satisfied with these, me.)

How are you doing with the doors on this?

I have four - yes four - P6 doors sitting in my garden shed. All complete with glass, trim, handles etc.

They were good when I put them in there many moons ago, but I haven't clapped eyes on them since. I kept them off the ground by putting them on a couple of XR 4X4 wheels.

I dare say if I try to move them, there'll be some big beefy spiders who'll tell me to FRO.

Trouble is, I'm at the other end of the UK to you by the looks of things

If they're any use to you, they're here and FOC.

Collection only I'm afraid, I can't see a time when I'll be going to Scottishland soon.

Possibly got a P6 Haynes here as well.

P.S. If they're no good for this project, anybody else fancy them? Same rules apply. Collection only.

I've got a week and a half's holiday from August 30th, going nowhere, so may be able to dig them out then.

I might have a V8 inlet manifold too. Came from an SD1. I took it off because it's got that AED fitted to it, and I swapped the entire gubbins over for a manual choke setup.

I would be interested in any good solid Doors particularly fronts if Cort doesn't need them. I'm a bit further into Scottishland though!

My P6 was originally sold from Woodford Green about 30 minutes from you as an uninteresting useless fact cheers Tam.

I need back doors but as you say I'm flippin miles away. I'll not be doing anything on this until I sort my cortina out.

where are the doors?

I'll be down in that there England for chomalongadingdong at start of sept, and in York for the GlF club mid sept.

assuming they are somewhere near there I could pap them in the octy boot

Depending on the size of 4 rover doors I could potentially assist with delivery to Chumley/York if they can be got up the A1 to Lincs.

I honestly can't say what car I'll be using for Chumley at present, but 4 doors might be struggle if I'm in the scruffy Sera. I could potentially take 2 to Chumley and 2 to York if no-one else can assist.

get yourself a reptile mate, they love spiders

I moved a set of P6 doors yesterday so I can tell you this:

The front doors occupy a space approximately: H: 107 cm W: 101 cm D: 20 cm (that depth is the widest point, allowing for the doorhandles and other protrusions. They get much narrower at the top where the window frames are of course. They weigh about 23 kg each. The back doors are about the same except for the slightly narrower width of 86 cm. They weigh 21 kg each.

I got three doors, four wheels (with tires!) and one spider into the Mitsubishi, although one of those doors did have the window frame removed. And I think the spider and only had seven legs.

I wish they'd made all of the panels out of aluminium.

Not having done it and may be asking a bit much but P6 doors strip down relatively easily I think . Basically the window section just lift out of doors to make a more moving friendly package. Basically only the metal door section itself I would need but the more the merrier if it could be made to fit ;)

Depends what Cort wants to do as he has first dibs obviously.
