Alloy Wheel Fitment

Recommended Posts

Been after a replacement wheel for the polo for a while as it has a slow puncture (Turns out the wheel is FUBARED).  Missed out on a couple, but have also been looking at full sets of Alloy wheels.

Its a 6N polo, and the fitment is meant to be.

4x100, 5.5JX13 ET43

Found a set off a Volvo 340 of all things with exactly the same figures apart from an ET of 40.

I know nothing about the ET figures, do you think these would fit my Polo??

Thanks again

They'll sit 3mm further out, the 40mm vs 43mm means the mounting face is closer to the centreline of the wheel - So if the mounting face is in the same place against your brake disk, the rest of the wheel will be sticking out. Can't imagine 3mm is going to give clearance issues assuming tyre sizes are the same.

If the Volvo wheels don't pan out, have a browse through some VW forums (yeah, I know.....) - being as they like playing with wheels, there'll be info about exactly how much you can vary depth and offset without causing clearance issues.

Agreed, 3mm difference in ET/offset isn't very likely to cause any issues. A lot of FWD stuff has ET35-45, and 4x100 is a very common size, as I've found while researching what other manufacturer's wheels fit a 2000 Civic - Rover stuff, Bini, all sorts does..

You haven't mentioned centre bore sizes - that's a potential minefield if you find something that's too big or small.

All the figures I have match apart from the ET. Are the centre bore sizes listed as part of the alloy wheel size anywhere.

Would it just be that the wheel fits, but the "bolts" dont fit....

Sorry for what's probably a really stupid question.

Thanks again

The centre bore is the hole in the middle of the wheel, and the raised lip around the middle of the hub.

If it matches, it means the lip just fits inside - it locates the wheel, leaving the bolts to just provide the clamping force.

If it's too big on the wheel, the lip isn't locating the wheel so the bolts additionally could be under a sideways force. It's also possible to get the wheel on wonky, this is minimised if you have bolts with a sloping shoulder and tighten them gradually - they'll centre the wheel. You may be able to find engineered rings to take one size bore on the wheel down to a smaller one for the car - but these are only generally made for common combinations.

If it's too small on the wheel, the wheel simply won't be flush to the mounting face and can't be used without reaming it out (snigger) - that's not going to be cheap.

You should be able to find a 6n steel in any scrapyard no problem I'd think.

Any 4x100 VW wheel should fit, mk3 golf etc.

4x100 Renault wheels also fit as the centre bore is larger, as above if you tighten them gradually the wheel will centre and it'll be fine.

Vauxhall wheels have a smaller centre bore so won't fit.

Edit: I actually have a couple of 6n steels in my back garden.
