Rickman Ranger thread

HI all,

seeing as ive updated the green ranger thread, i thought that an update was due on this one too.

because this ranger is in good nick (and should stay that way imho) i made the decision to stop using it for trials, and use the green one instead.  that means that the convertible can be put back into service as a normal, civvy road car.  unfortunately, due to the wife not being keen on being a 6 vehicle family, this will not remain in my ownership :-(

there is, however, a silver lining......

My Dad is buying it from me :-D

I had a spare type 9 'box that came with the green one, so he has bought that also, and there are plans afoot....

the list so far is new rear springs/bushes, type 9 box and associated prop shaft, 3.89 diff (because im keeping all of the others lol), original rickman rear seat to go in, new brakes all round, new wheel bearings, new road tyres, new brake lines, better stereo system, roof rack, possibly a new soft top (price dependent), and a general bloody good clean.

so far he has chucked about £700 at it, and he doesn't look like slowing down soon.  i might have to get him to sign up on here, as he clearly has the autoshite bug haha!

at the moment, it is sat on the drive, with no rear drive gear/springs/prop/wheels. but once the weather picks up a little, we will be cracking on putting her back together.

I'll update as and when things happen.

cheers,

Lee

another thread resurrection - i really am rubbish at keeping things current!

we never did get around to sticking the 5 speed box in this one, in fact, it sat doing not a lot but getting MOTd for a while, with the odd run out in the sun.

we decided to swap the engine into the green ranger for trials, as it was a much stronger lump, with the intention of refurbing the one out of the green ranger, and fitting it back in with the type 9.

with the arrival of the Rancher, this took its place at the back of the garage, until recently it was sold, sans engine and box, to a guy (who i believe may be on here now?) who is going to stick a race tuned pinto in it - could be interesting!  so this chapter of rickmanning is sadly closed, but hopefully to be taken up by another fellow shiter  8)

cheers!

Missed this thread the first time. I hadn't seen a Rickman in years. Then I spotted a Rickman Ranger last week on top of a shipping container in Cannock !

Good to see there a few still around.

That guy was Nick from Bristol who did indeed stick a race tuned Pinto in it. He did a great job fitting many new ancillaries but then he had a change of plans and advertised it on eBay. I had fancied one for a while and particularly wanted a convertible. I had seen some nice 1300 cross flows advertised but really wanted a bigger lump to various things like trailers for tip runs, sailing dinghies and a caravan (not all at the same time!). I went to see it and was seduced by all the new parts but more than anything, the sound of the 2 litre Pinto which to my ear is amazing. It has a Kent KCHT1 camshaft and a Weber 38DGAS carb (originally set up for some kind of hot rod with twin 45's). I know I paid top dollar for the car (possibly a world record for a Ranger!!) but I think it would break for close to what I paid for it and maybe I will find another nutter like me when I have finished with it! I don't think that will be any time soon as I am already hooked on the whole Rickman experience.

I have done about 120 miles in it so far including a first drive in horrendous Bristol rush hour traffic then back home up the M5. I wondered how driveable it would be with the camshaft especially around town but I have been pleasantly surprised. There is virtually no power below 2,000 r.p.m but it is actually quite good fund flicking between 2nd and 3rd keeping it in the power band around town. On the open road it is fine, haven't been over 70 in it yet as I am running the newly rebuilt engine in a bit. The driving experience is best described as mk2 Transit but no surprise there really. I was expecting to find a few jobs to do as the engine is a new installation and the car hasn't been on the road for a while but have found very little - carb needs setting up a bit better, no dashboard lights other than that not much. Intend to use it as what it is which is a utility vehicle
