Supra resurrection

Hi!

My dad owns a 1986 Toyota Supra 3.0 Turbo. This one:

He stashed it in the garage in October 2013 for hibernation but did not drive it last year because the weather was bad and he did not have time for the Supra. This spring, he likes to drive it again, but is afraid to have problems after such a long hibernation.

That´s what he did before stashing it away:

* pump up the tires

* fill the tank with fresh petrol

* disconnect the battery

Nothing more.

Now he wants me to help him get it running again. But what should we do to it to start into a trouble-free season 2015?

It will need a new battery I am almost sure. But that about the fuel? It needs 98 or Super100 and the tank is full of it. Only from autumn 2013.  :?

Any other advice?

Thanks a lot!

The fuel should be fine, Lukas. It does 'go off' over time, but it will probably be OK after just 18 months.

Lovely Supra, btw.

Aye, fuel should be fine. Sometimes a wee slash of new stuff helps but that cost me money. Cos it's been sitting, I'd pump the brakes and see if there's any obvious leaking and same with fuel lines. Just cast yer eyes over it like.

Get it up to running temp and check all fluid levels.

Make sure wipers work before you take it out on the road. ;)

It will probably creek and groan as the bushes haven't been exercised in a wee while.

Check exhaust colour after a run.

Uhm...

As some one who drove one of these from Oxford to Exeter after it had been standing for 8 years I will give you the following advice:

Put the battery back in place, check the fluid levels, tyres, and drive it. If after a couple of mile the charge light doesn't illuminate and the back end doesn't fall apart into rusty dust then it is fine and will need nothing further.

My first check would be to make sure the park brake isn't stuck on. Then I would check the clutch for the same reason.

Spark plugs out and spin it over, make sure that lovely oil pressure gets around the engine. Plugs back in, confirm spark.

Fresh fuel maybe.

Give it a spin.

All of the above, plus you'll need to put the letters back on the registration plate.

We like Supras and that looks like a very fine example.  I'm sure all will be well.

I really wouldn't ever consider putting a car away with a full tank of fuel! But like everyone else, it boils down to pretty much just making sure the battery has charge, then just starting it.

More than likely stating the obvious but an oil change in fairly sort order would be a nice gesture :)
