Shite Windscreen Cover Question

My 75 has a cracked screen, been like it since I bought it but its now getting much worse and creeping across the screen.

I have never claimed a penny from an insurance company in 15 years driving.

My question is should I claim on the insurance? They say it doesn't affect your no claims bonus but I know what insurance companies are like, they always look to get their money back somehow.

Has anyone claimed on their insurance then found their premium increase next year? Or am I better off just shopping around for a new screen supplied and fitted and leaving the insurance alone? I believe my screen excess is £70.

It was cracked during PBK's ownership but they don't need to know that

Try a company called Discount Windscreens. They're based Chelmsford/Maldon area, but cover the whole of Essex. Very friendly, knowledgeable guy came to my house and supplied/fitted a new screen to the Maestro for £130 cash, I'm not sure how much a 75 one would be though. I didn't want to go through the insurance either. All the other places I tried wanted around the £200 mark!

On this subject does anyone know if windscreen companies will be happy to fit a customer supplied screen? The Swift could do with one thanks to the daft previous owner clearing the inside with the back of her hand while wearing a ring or something and am I hell paying near £200 when I can get a good used one for a third of that.

I would definitely claim on the insurance. You'll have to pay the first £50 or £75 but it doesn't affect your ncb. Have a look at your policy details if you want to be sure but I've never known it have any effect.

I've never known you to lose your NCB, but with Swiftcover you're NCB is frozen for any year you make a windscreen claim. I think that's pretty unusual though.

I've had fitters install screens I supplied before, although they recommended a new 'seal' (whether I supplied it or them) to minimise the risk of water getting behind it and sitting against the bond - which is the real water seal.

I had a run of (genuine) bad luck years back and went through something like 3 screens in 4 months. My policy never went up.

Its really quite amazing what a difference a brand new screen makes - you think your old one is fine (damage aside) until you get a new one and its a revelation, especially at night, without all the tiny little flaws that you kind of tuned out on the old screen.

I claimed for three in 18 months and never had a query or a policy increase.

just claimed for one my van, 10 days before the insurance ran out.

In the past I've been asked have you claimed for a window, the last few renewals though I've not been asked..

Cheers for the replies, sod it I will claim then, after all I've probably spent thousands on car insurance and never seen a penny back.
