I always wear full goggles when grinding like those in derskines post. Safety glasses are next to useless.

I've never had metal in my eyes but I have once had pressurised petrol in both eyes at same time!

A colleague was trying to start a Cavalier while it was up on a ramp, he cranked it over then since it wouldn't fire pulled the main tank to engine fuel pipe off to check fuel was flowing. It was pressurised and spurted straight across the workshop hitting me straight in the face!

The pain was immense! Awful burning pain. Luckily another work mate saw it happen, led me to the sink and flushed my face down and gave me eye wash solution. No lasting damage done but my god it was horrible. Scary as fook when your staggering around, eyes open but you can't see anything but blurry light! Since then I've always worn eye protection.

I once had petrol spray at my face, luckily I closed my eyes as it hit, i still got some in, it stung like buggery i stumbled straight into the house with my eyes closed and stinging, ran my eye under the kitchen tap, shouted mrs fp and asked her to get the big bottle of milk from the fridge and pour it into my eye, it appeared to stop the stinging.

At a garage where I worked in about 1986.. lad replacing rear brake shoes on a Marina van. Long nose pliers slipped and made a hole to the side of one nostril., travelled upwards parallel to the nostril and came to rest about 10mm from the corner of the eye/tear duct area. Missed everything vital, and little blood. I drove him to Hospital in a Leaf Sprung Land Rover. He found the holding the pliers in place was more painful than leaving them be..... We got there and he had pictures taken for the Hospital's "Black Museum"..... took half an hour to extract and sort....

It's probably the scariest thing I've ever had happen to me! When it happened I really thought I was fucked and I'd at least lose my sight. Absolutely scared me shitless!

Lucky it was so long ago on an old Cav, imagine the same happening now on a modern high pressure system. It could really do some damage.

Another wheeze with eyes is blasting carb cleaner into a dismantled carb, and there being a drilling where you're not expecting it. Blammo, right in the eye. Minutes of fun stumbling about blind and in pain.

Fitted new seats into my Mini and used goggles the whole time. Apart from the last hole, which responded by throwing a piece of swarf into my right eye.

So I fitted the seat while squinting, drove to the hospital while squinting, then had a stunning nurse with the largest pair of tongs in NATO plucked it out. Apart from being terrified by the size of the tongs, the worst bit was the audible "plop" as the piece of swarf came out. Did you hear that, PG? :-)

I always wear googles when working on a car these day and my consultant told me to wear glasses although I don't really need them but just for protection as I've already lost one and wouldn't want to lose the other.

But saying that I've still managed some near misses with the good one with the odd splinter although I'm careful and only recently I managed to get ink strip and boiling water in my good eye and that involved a trip to the hospital and by the time I arrived I was bricking it as I could hardly see ( the parking took a lot to be desired in the hospital car park lol)

I've had so many injections in the bad eye (sometimes one a day which was quite painful) that I was glad to get it removed in the end.post-9282-0-30362200-1426449656_thumb.jpg

I would show you what it looks like a like but it may put people off their dinner lol.

But I do find when the yellow dye goes into my good eye it's quite alright really as it saves putting my sunglasses on lol

And an added bonus one of the eye nurses at the hospital wants to go for a date next month so it isn't all bad lol

I once got a tiny bit of metal right in the middle of my eye at the workshop and, in my infinite wisdom, decided the best way to get it out would be to hold my lids forced open and go at it with a sewing needle in front of a mirror.

It... actually worked pretty well and it came out.

But I enjoy making people cringe with the story. Just another day at the health and safety disaster zone I call my workshop.
