he just worrying that it wont show up as taxed even though he'll have email from dvla and at a push previous owner still be 'taxed' ??

It will show up as taxed until the V5 lands at the DVLA,  you are bound to be safe for a few days minimum.

The government is just starting to assume that everyone has internet access,  it will be a few more years before they can assume that we all have smartphones.

We bought a car off a chap recently and it was still showing taxed when the V5 landed on our doormat, there must be some lag in the system!

Just drive it home, if its taxed now what does the think is gonna make it 'not show up as taxed'?

I think the new rules are OK, I think they basically make it ok to drive home on the 'dregs' of the previous keepers tax.

As several have said, it's not like the Police/DVLA immediately become aware that a V5 has been signed, so why worry? We only need to start doing that when they make V5s online only. I believe they're hoping to do this before too long...

The only way I can see there'd be an issue is if you were to be stopped on the way home from buying a car and it wast taxed on your name. Then your fate might depend on the mood of the copper...

Aha, yeah, but, like, what if you bought a car off a copper who was in traffic division?

I think the tax is still valid until the DVLA receive the registration document, then they cancel the tax.

You don't tax it in anyone's name. A car is taxed, and has a registered keeper, and then someone else can drive it with permission and the correct insurance.

Drive it home. It won't be untaxed until the DVLA process the v5 which will be a week or more.
