Peugeot 406 td

Any thing to look for when buying? Now having two cars kaput I have taken the sensible option to buy another car. Wife has spotted a Peugeot 406 td estate local. Nearly 180k on clock, little smoke for 30 seconds according to the ad and cambelt done at 160k. Any pitfalls? Would it be botch pump too. It's a 1998 on a single plate.

Should be Bosch. A mate of mine is breaking an estate with rampant rot. Maybe worth looking for.

Everywhere and anywhere? Old pugs didn't rot that much did they? Rarely seen a 405 with no arches

I think the back end underside was rotten on this one. It's a P reg MK1.

Peugeots are either great or shit. The last 406 I had failed the test on extensive rot. The trouble with them (like all Peugeots in my experience) is when one thing goes wrong, loads of things do. Usually it's fairly minor things but they all mount up to the point you think the manafacturer is conspiring against you to drive you mental.

Peugeot 406 In Old Ones Rust Shock

Mainly sills tbh, as Pug, in their infinite wotsit, decided to fit rubber strips along them which are held on with a load of plastic clips and just in the right location for people to kick them off getting out the car leaving the clip holes in the sill for water to pour in. They also made the drains pitifully small and consequently they're easily blocked (no, they're not at the jacking points).

Note: This doesn't apply to toupes coupés

Any car over 15 years old will be suffering bodily - even if you can't always see it.

I thought one of the redeeming points of the Peugeot range was its resistance to corrosion. How wrong I was. Apart from the sills where else do they go? I'd wager they are a lot less probe than equivalent Mondeo etc?

It's down to people not bothering to replace the seal clips and ignoring the sloshing sound coming from a sill

That's about it really, I did hear of someone getting an advisory for a crusty rear subframe but it was still solid when they investigated.

Umm, off the top of my head, D8 DTs, 1.9s are Bosch, 2.1s are Lucas EPIdemiC (which won't run on veg but are pretty reliable in the forum's experience, they only seem to get replaced because garages make a lot of money on them). They're frequently changed for Bosch pumps anyway. Handbrakes are lousy and need fettling to get them through a test, drum-in.disk handbrake backplates can rust to buggery, are expensive new & need the hub pulling to change. Umm, clicking noise behind the dash is the recirculation flap stepper motor which strips/shears nylon gear wheels (remove & leave flap open). The usual PSA dodgy ignition switches, blower fan wiring connector issues, cooling fan relays behind the grille getting wet. I can't think of anything else specific, just usual stuff like any other car.

Blimey, talk about bad luck - a Vectra gearbox failing, a Metro gearbox failing, and getting a Corsa C. Still, these things are supposed to happen in 3s so maybe you will win the lottery on Saturday?
