This is completely ace. Also, these alloys are brilliant because they're inexplicable.

I'll bet those asterisk shaped centre caps are among the rarest things on the planet.

Ok. so Where was I. . . . . .

Ahh yes. Once the engine was in, i was able to come to the conclusion that I was far from complete. The only thing left in the engine bay was the brakes and washer bottle. The injection loom came with the engine I bought, but the rest I had to find. Have you ever tried to find parts for a mk2 carlton?? Its hard.

So I made a list.

Airbox

Airflow meter and pipe

Expansion bottle

All coolant pipes

Battery Pos loom

alternator and brackets

Power steering pump brackets

rear gearbox support

fuel pump

fuel tank

Coil

exhaust manifold and down pipe

Yeah, try finding all that on ebay!! I dropped on lucky really. After months of searching I found a bloke in Selby who was selling manta and carlton parts. I gave him the list, and 2 days later he called to say he had everything I needed. (SHOCK HORROR)

Once I picked all the parts up, i was like a kid in at christmas having just unwrapped a box full of lego. I begun the rebuild.

Fuel tank I picked up was fairly new, so that got 2 layers of hammerite too.

Fitted the fuel pump. Had to make a new bracket as the old one had been pillaged by previous owner

Before i fitted the tank, I cleaned up and painted any rusty areas ... you know.... because rust happens n all.

Both rear shockers were shot, so ebay brought me some new ones. Along with a new rear spring which snapped when I jacked the car up.

SO this is what the engine bay looks like with all the bits in place!

IMG_4656_zpspet1r3ny.jpg

After bolting everything up, connecting all the plugs and hoses, filling it with oil i spent the next two days winding the engine over by hand (couple revolutions a day) just to get the oil in play. Then I bought a new battery and wound it over with the king lead off. Sounded ok. So without further adue...adew....ajew?.... what ever, I attempted a start up. it wouldnt fire. So i asked myself if Id got the ignition timing 180 out. Swapped all the leads round and hey presto, it runs.

4 new tyres went on

New clutch cable fitted too, damn why are vauxhall clutch cables a pain to fit!!

Then it was upgraded to driveway status.

Grand stuff.  I have a real soft spot for Royales and Carltons, definitely an itch I must scratch at some point.

Those are truly outstanding alloys.

Very cool car. I had the 2.2 brakes on my Manta about 10 years ago. Getting the discs was a right mission back then.

Our works pool car was a 2.2 Carlton CD, met black. This was when I worked at Swan Hunter, for a Weapon Systems sub cont. Ferranti.

I got to drive it as a 'perk' weekends.... really nice wafter :-P  [free petrol too].

I was a bit miffed, one morning, when I went round the carpark to get it and found a 'weapons grade' gouge, along the whole NS, 2" below the door handles   - wasn't me!!

Apparently the Proj Director had helmed it a couple of days before - something of a ON gas/ON brake fellow - and whilst removing it backwards from the slot (by the paint shop) he gunned it out and straight along a forklift skip [these are stout metal boxes, with a flange round them, used to move small parts about the paint shop] >>> too small to see blind side/just 2" short of the doorhandles.

He had the good grace to blush when I mentioned the damage, me being the 'nominated keeper in charge/hoover/carwash/oil check/fill up guy'.

Lovely, twas

*SnoFlake centres FTW

Splendid work, really nice job. Is the old fuel tank terminally rotten? I think it would be worth saving and trying to patch up if not too bad, given how 1) they eventually rust, and 2) are nigh impossible to find now.

The original fuel tank had been removed and slung in the bin by previous owner. No care was taken to remove the fuel sender unit or anything like that. He had bought a new tank only it was for a carb'd model, not injection, so it was a decision to either modify it or find the right one.

Ive got carlton 2.2 disks on my Manta aswell, they need renewing soon.

So, once it was running fine... i sorted all the lighting connections and bulbs out. It had been sat since the early 90's I think so pretty much every electrical connector has corroded..... Then it was back into my home town for an exhaust to be made. (sorry no picks)

Then it was MOT time

One advisory was the front disks.

so they got changed. All newish motor factors are shit. No one could get any.. I got some from an old school factors who sourced them in for me. Grand job.

And so, it was on the road. YAY!

or not.

The heater blower didnt work, and the matrix shat itself into the footwell.

Another trip to selby to pick up a heater blower, matrix and a few other items which I'll go onto later.
