Winter tyres - cost effective?

First bit of snow this winter...just a dusting but good to test out this set of tyres before the weather really turns.

Mrs P's Fiat is a bit slippy slidey in the wet which is odd as the car is wearing two year old Conti's with decent tread. Maybe the rubber has hardened or something but it is crazily tricky on roundabouts.

I was thinking on getting a replacement set of Uniroyal rain tyres - any thoughts on whether they are a decent half way house between a standard and full winter tyre?

All seasons are what you want, lots of them on the market now, Vrdesteins, Bridgestone, Goodyear and Hankook all make good ones.

Falkens are supposed to make good ones as well

I like my Maloya all season tyres, a massive improvement over the Michelins they replaced that cost twice as much.
