Mongol Rally

One of my younger mechanically incompetent colleagues has decided to expand his horizons and do the Mongol Rally next year.

He therefore needs a car. The rules are 'ideally under 1 litres but upto 1200cc if you must'

It'll have to SUPER cheap due to the largest majority of his income being disposed of on beer and fags (as indeed it should be for a 23 yr old).

I thought a Micra would be good but dull. Alternatives include the Hijet with true sleeping capability but OMGHGF worries. I also suggested a truly lovely Aixam Super Luxe (500cc Kubota diesel for maximum SHITE), he was very impressed by this option.

.... mechanically incompetent ....

I think he'd do well to stick with a Micra.

Some graduate chap sat next to me for a while who'd done this, he chose a Suzuki Alto which he reckoned was a flippin WINNAR, he said he basically got in and drove it straight there, no hassle

What about a CityRover? Oh hang on theyre 1400 arent they. Maybe take one piston out then.

Give it a week with my colleague and it'll loose a cylinder no problem.

What he needs is a Subaru 700 van.  55mph flat out, dreadful seats, zero crash protection, and you can't kip in the back properly as there's a fucking great hump over the engine.  Handles like an elephant on a skateboard and has no crosswind stability whatsoever.  Perfect.

Two teams in 2CVs tackled this event a while back - 2008 perhaps. IIRC, one of them got utterly wrecked in a traffic accident in Russia. Dashcams weren't all the rage back then, which is a shame. They might at least have got £250 from You've Been Framed.

Citroen AX 997cc - so light that if it fails you can pick it up and carry it.
