Borked 'modern' - 2002 Pug 307 1.6 petrol not starting

A mate's 2002 Peugeot 307 1.6 petrol is refusing to start.

He apparently managed to start it last night, put the fan on to defrost the windows and then it lost power (this may be a coincidence). It then refused to start again, and the immobiliser / door lock switch on the dashboard was flickering.

It is low on fuel and parked on a slope, so my first suggestion to him was to bung in some more fuel, but that doesn't explain the flashing immobiliser light.

Any ideas? Matey has just forked out for a new exhaust & tyres and is extremely skint, so any help greatly received.

(EDIT: I've already replaced the missing 20p from the handbrake but that didn't help)

Easy stuff first : check battery voltage, check fuses/relays. Next step is probably an OBD scan ?

Plenty of cranking voltage, engine coughed but would not start... it felt like an immobiliser issue, and the flashing immobiliser switch thing makes me think it was somehow part of the problem, at least.

Not that I'm aware of... but the current key did briefly start it yesterday, it lost power whilst running, so I doubt that's causing the problem

Sounds like alternator may have snuffed it......................Big arse Megane I messed about with recently did similar. Without juice being produced from alternator, most moderns won't run properly, if at all.

I'd stick some fuel in it and see if it'll go with a jump. I've had similar weirdness when the positive battery terminal was loose.

Ta for the ideas folks.

It's turning over OK, just not firing beyond the sort of cough you get when the immobiliser is kicking in, yo! Or when there's no fuel in the tank...

That is insane. All moderns are shit, etc.

Would start for a nanosecond, but as soon as various electrical things [ecu etc] demanded electricity, would snuff it. It's risky, but you could try connecting it via jump leads to another vehicle, and see if it starts and runs.......of course, you may possibly blow things up due to voltage spikes, rioting nuns, feral kittens, and vile children........................

Does it have automatic wipers? A duff rain sensor can cause much fusebox borkage, and the car won't run. Because:French.

Check that the wiring round the rain sensor trim panel hasn't chewed through the wires.

Sounds like the Battery is knackered or has been previously mentioned the alternator has decided to call it a day. It's worth checking the earth to the fusebox on these as it can become loose, and it's not unknown for the fusebox units themselves throwing their toys out of the pram. If there is still sufficient power in the battery it might be worth doing a Bsi reset procedure....I'm on my phone so I can't provide a link but if you Google 307 Bsi reset you'll find it easily after doing all the requisite checks first.

BSI reset procedure:

1. Roll up left trouser leg...

I'd go for the transponder ariel around the ignition lock myself, but then it is French so maybe a bulb blew. The stuff about jump leads is correct, unless you have the sort that has the suppressor in them (or have one for your mig welder that you can put across them).

Ace - thanks all :-)

I've forwarded the BSI reset info to matey, along with a suggestion to put some more fuel in it. Let's see if that sorts it out.

Check the under bonnet fuse box for water ingress or mouse piss.
