How to go about taxing a car these days..

I wonder if someone could give me some advice as I bought a car today which has been on sorn this month and I was going to tax the car online before driving it back but couldn't get online as I wanted to do it on monthly direct debit basis.

So I thought I would leave it till tomorrow and go into our local post office and sort it Out there and then

Now the problem Is I only had a days cover insurance on the car as its going into my garage for a month or so before I will use it so will be off-road for the foreseeable future till I sell one of my other cars .

So is there a way to tax an uninsured car.

Yes, the car no longer has to be insured to tax it. However it's now illegal to have a car that is taxed but not insured.

Bloody hell it gets even more complicated than before..so now I will be breaking the law if I tax the car.. I wonder how I'm going to get round that one lol.

Bloody red tape why didn't the government just put a couple of pence on a litre of juice and be done with such a crazy system..

I often wonder what would happen if we all did just sell up and drive these new cars which are rated at zero ved. Would the government be forced to put the price on fuel?

I don't know what percentage of total ved comes from private cars, and of that what percentage is a decent chunk (say over 150 per year). I can't help thinking that those that chose to drive older cars, or higher rate ved cars, are subsidising the lower rate cars.

I suppose that putting the cost on fuel would then expose the untruths that are written about fuel economy of these lower rated cars.

Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now. I didn't realise it was illegal to have a car that is taxed but not insured.

OK I bought a car the other week that was out of tax on December 1st. I only have the green slip from the V5 and I can't sorn it. There's nowhere on the Internet to do it without the full V5.

If you follow the link for them to send you the form, it isn't there

I'm sure expecting a fine as I also can't find a phone number

Is it safe to assume that if the day insurance has expired then you have got the car home now? In that case why not just put it on sorn until you take it out of your garage next month?

The problem is that is I've just driven the car about 180 mile home and I also went over the dartford crossing (which is another ripoff and now has to be paid online or via phone) so was most probably picked up by some big brother camera on the way for some wallet rape somewhere along the line.

What I've done is set up the tax on a monthly direct debit from the 1st Dec and hopefully that should be the last I hear from it but it's crazy as whatever way youturn your wrong..

It seems it's just another way of taxing people under the guise of a fine bloody knob ends
