sierraman Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Got a halfords trolley jack. The slave piston is leaking, does anyone know if obtaining a new seal and fitting it is feasible? Or is it a recon job?
Micrashed Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I know my dad did his years ago with a new seal, but unless you are Doris Stokes I dont think I can check how he did it. M'coli 1
alf892 Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Oswald Seals used to be great at matching seals especially if you can send the old one......and don't forget to tell them what liquid you are going to use. I think they got took over but google will tell you.
brickwall Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I always service my bottle jacks. Dunno about trolley jacks though.
mat_the_cat Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 If the actual piston is damaged causing the leak, then I'd buy another. More expensive jacks tend to have spares back-up; certainly I've overhauled mine with all new seals for under £2. If you can match up the seals and piston is OK it should be an easy job.
sierraman Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 Whipped it apart last night. As suspected the plastic o ring that seals the master cylinder was fooked. Fortunately I'm going to give city seals and bearings a go in Rotherham. If it costs just a few quid to get it back in service then so much the better. Checked main seal on piston and its still tight, but if I can obtain a spare ill swap it.
lisbon_road Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 I remember a few years back someone saying to me that these were so cheap that you could buy them for a job and throw them out afterwards. I think he'd found them on sale somewhere. I was horrified by that, madness of modern life. What you are doing is heroic. Please let us know how you get on, part numbers and so on would be helpful. I have a Halfords jack which is ok but it drops a bit faster than it should so it must be on the way out. You can buy special trolley jack oil but I bet it is something very ordinary rebadged.
sierraman Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 Rang Halfords they no longer supply the overhaul kit. I will not be deterred! A 1995 edition of car mechanics details how to strip it down so... I'll keep you informed Minimad5, Forty-two and KruJoe 3
Bren Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 I bet they offered to sell you a new one. KruJoe 1
sierraman Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 Swapped the seal, filled with oil. Now it will lift only about an inch???
sierraman Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 Bled it. Rises an inch or so then nowt. Thinking possibly internals are bolloxed. It's cost me nowt to try at least before I give in and squander £30 on a new un...
sierraman Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 I'm trying to upload through an iPod which doesn't allow me to do this. Unless anyone can explain how I do this?
