Replacing back window -Saab floppy top

As discussed on News thread, back window on the Saab shattered last night.

Put the hood up to have a better look and there seems to be a channel the glass sat in. After applying a screwdriver I reckon I can clear the channel out ish.

Is there an alternative to glass I can use to fill the hole?

Happy if I can get the hole filled, even if I cant use the hood. Even better if there is a way to make it heated :)

Perspex would be one option, but it's pretty brittle. Polycarbonate (eg Lexan) is much tougher but scratches easily. Would have thought that either would be OK with a heated rear window kit - if you do go down that route then I can send you the link to a company who make kits you cut to size yourself.

To keep gf-moog happy I need to do something which means we can keep it running for another 6 months. She doesn't do many miles, just to work and back.

Will go and look at lexan.

Link would be great.

For the HRW - if there is a choice in the size you need look for one which doesn't require the controller as this will be cheaper. Mine came out around £50 from memory, including import duty but that was for a small square van window. If you go for Lexan then it's pretty good to work with; you can trim it with tin snips, and bend it to get quite intricate shapes. I've even made a new 'glass' front to an instrument panel with it!

Whatever you use, make sure it is well fixed in. It could be nasty if it blew out on a motorway and drivers started swerving to avoid it.

Have you asked on UKSAABS.co.uk if anyone has a rear window or even a hood?

I was just going to suggest the above. Surely the SAAB specialists/forums know of asolution?

Tried Autoglass or similar?

Spoke to 3 glass places and it would have to be specially made. They were only bonded like this for a couple of years after which you could remove them.

I would have to find a secondhand hood with glass and fit that. The hood is fine which is why I dont want to mess with it.

Have you tried cab glass? They specialise in plant but could cut a piece of glass ready to 'bond' in with araldite/gaffer tape

That might be an idea. I think GF-Moog has decided she wants car replaced. I think she wouldn't trust it if isn't a "proper" repair.

Thanks for suggestions but will just put it up for sale without window, let new buyer make a decision.

There's a guy on Facebook advertising a 900/9-3 convert for spares/breaking. Think it was in the Saab Nuts group. He didn't mention the soft top, but I assume he has it still.
