I remember some new list prices going up by £2k after this scheme was introduced, so even the customers weren't benefiting.

WHAT WAS POINT.

The point - with my cynical head on - was to stimulate the economy by getting people to buy new cars "for £2k less" (WOO, GOOD VALUE!!!) using borrowed money. This was hidden behind the usual "good for the environment" nonsense plus a lack of hard information about the reality of the situation which is normal nowadays...

Even if the cars came from abroad and much/most of the money went back there, the banks made a significant profit; if people don't borrow money from the banks then UKplc is totally scuppered - UKplc subsists on personal and corporate debt (and the interest charged on it) and wouldn't last long without it, don't forget :(

And yes, Boris is 'misguided' in much of the stuff he suggests! Unfortunately, I suspect he will go far and get into a position to really mess things up nationally rather than locally (as he can do now).

Is there and recent pics of the cars on the airfield. The ones above look old or did I read it wrong

I wonder what the "historic Citroen" was?

And 212 Citroen ZXs...So they've managed to wipe almost an entire model of car in the UK. Nice one guys!

Was a boom-time for dodgy MoT's too according to a mate of mine in the trade. (He reckoned about a quarter of the ones he saw were clearly on iffy tickets). If you knew the right people, unticketed scrapper could be "MoT'd" then after a month or so (so no comeback against the tester) it could be traded for the 2K and be scrapped anyway.

To be honest, not sure where I stand on this ruse, in one way I'm against it, the other, I think, well, what would I do if I had something that was going to be junked anyway?

It's one of the times when the MORALITY is in conflict with the Legality.

In the spirit of the scheme, it is less immoral than car manufacturers putting up prices by £2K because they know the customers are stupid.

I would have understood it slightly better had they limited the cars to those made in the UK. It might, just might, have given our manufacturing base a shot in the arm, even if the actual profits had gone abroad.

Ah but that wouldn't be allowed under European Free Trade.

Plus Who actually makes cars in the UK ?

Toyota ? Engines and some of the range.

Nissan? Yes. The Quashtwat, and Nuke from Sunderland (I think)?

Mini Yes. The Engines come from Coleshill, body from Swindon. but the CUNTRYman comes from Austria

BMW Well parts - as the Engines come from Coleshill, and the RR comes from Swindon.

Honda? Yes they assemble the civic in Swindon but engines come from japan.

Ford ? Gearboxes from Wales ?

Jaguar ? Land Rover ?

What about the manufacturers of parts who ship from the UK to Europe and the rest of the world ?

VW ? Well Bentley from Crewe perhaps.

I'm going to have a chat with Clive at the IPTOC to see if I can find out more about the Piazza Turbo that was sh*tcanned. There's not many things Piazza-related that escape him; if a Piazza hit the crusher he'd have got wind of it.

Does anybody know what the most valuable car scrapped was? Any E type jags? I want to be outraged, daily mail style.

Anybody recall the Triumph Mayflower that BMW was refusing to save? There was a bit of a campaign to save it.

If it's any consolation, a few Minors and similar ended up being ringed by using rotten wrecks as ID. Some scrap yards even sold cars minus ID on ebay!

One Mini Moke on the list. A good one is easily worth 5 figures, and even a rotter with correct paperwork would have been well over 2k value.

Remember?

I'll wager that was sold by Stout Brothers in Forfar not 5 miles from me.

Honda DO make petrol engines at Swindon, I used to deliver caravans, bus shelters and brew XI cans melted down into ingots which they then turned into cylinder heads and engine blocks. The diesel lumps are made in Japan.

Unless it's all changed now.

Those pics are ancient, I'm sure quite a few have gone now. I think the idea of stockpiling them was to prevent salvage market getting saturated. The dealer I spoke to said they were only allowed to sell scrappage cars for £100 tops due to some government ruling. A golden age for the scrap metal dealers though!

Abernyte surely? It was, if you get the original size on Flickr you can read the sticker. The car was like brand new and I think it was the third last surviving Chrysler Horizon in the UK.

I don't get it if the horizon was at a show someone must have cared for it. There's a pic of a A30 with owners club stickers.....

Tbh I would love to see another scrappage scheme. This though it has to be for "super cars" those stupid tiny dick replacements bald wankers feel the need to own.

They are all total shit and I would love to see the backlash it created if one tiny dent happened on a precious Ferrari or lamborgini.

Can I be put in charge of the crusher?

I remember the garage in forfar selling these and SR is an angus reg but I could be wrong.

Apologies to whoever 'owns' this pic that was on aronline but the horizon was bought new by Ian Tasker in Forfar. Seems unlikely he would go to Abernyte when they were for sale at Lochside Garage on his doorstep.

Ah, I didn't realise Stouts had more than one branch.

It was certainly cared for when I took that picture, and possibly still in the hands of Ian Tasker. Shortly before it was scrapped I saw it parked at the gatehouse of a wind farm I was working at. It belonged to the security guard and from speaking to him I got the impression it was "just a car" to him, and he didn't own it when it was going to shows.

We are miles apart on those sentiments I'm afraid.

Didn't that Hunter belong to Trigger?

I don't think so!

One that upset me was a minter than mint 30k S reg Nissan Micra with air con and alloys and the 1.3i engine that got flagged at my local Kia dealers by a old lady, such a waste.
